About the Role
Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to develop and apply power system and electricity market models and tools for engineering analyses of power grid planning and operations. This role involves research in energy and power systems, electricity market design, power flow modeling, energy storage, large load integration, and interdependencies between power grid and natural gas systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement power grid planning/operations algorithms and tools.
- Conduct data analysis related to energy and power systems, with emphasis on optimization, stochastic modeling methodologies, energy storage, electricity market analysis, and power flow modeling.
- Support multidisciplinary teams in applying methods and tools to complex environmental, water, and energy system analysis issues.
- Prepare reports, papers, and presentations for conferences, workshops, and technical journals.
- Support program development, including proposal preparation and sponsor interactions.
- Apply technical models to case studies and real-world applications.
- Document and publish software to internal/external software repositories.
- This position may require domestic and international travel.
- This position requires an on-site presence at the Argonne campus in Lemont, Illinois.
Requirements & Tech Stack
- Recent or soon-to-be completed (typically within the last 0-5 years) Ph.D. in Engineering, Operations Research, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field.
- Strong understanding of optimization, power systems operations and planning.
- Understanding of the U.S. electricity system, wholesale electricity markets, and basic financial & economic principles.
- Experience with Julia or Python.
- Experience in academic writing & publication.
- Strong communication skills at all levels of the organization.
- Ability to be highly motivated and self-starting.
