Engineering Intern
MagLev Aero
About the Role
MagLev Aero is a stealth mode startup developing a novel Propulsion Platform for Urban Air Mobility. We are seeking driven, high-performance, independent achievers to join our multidisciplinary team and build a groundbreaking electric VTOL platform.
Job Description
MagLev is looking for fast-paced, enthusiastic, motivated, and collaborative interns specializing in mechanical and aerospace engineering. You will work under the direction of a lead engineer to develop and implement project deliverables, primarily focusing on mechanical and aerospace engineering projects.
Key Responsibilities
- CAD Design & Modeling: Utilize Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software (e.g., SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Onshape) to create and modify detailed 3D models and engineering drawings for mechanical components and assemblies.
- Rapid Prototyping Execution: Operate and maintain 3D printers (FDM, SLA, etc.) and other rapid prototyping tools to fabricate components for design validation and testing.
- Testing & Iteration: Design and execute physical testing plans to validate the performance, strength, and fit of prototype components, driving design revisions based on empirical data.
- Assembly & Integration: Assist in the hands-on assembly, alignment, and mechanical integration of complex systems and subsystems.
- Documentation: Maintain organized files of all CAD models, revisions, and detailed documentation for prototypes and final designs.
Qualifications
- Academic Background: Currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related technical field.
- Proven experience in at least one industry-standard CAD software package.
- Hands-On Prototyping: Extensive, demonstrable experience operating and troubleshooting various 3D printing technologies (understanding materials, slicing, and print optimization).
- Prior involvement in rapid design and build projects, especially those requiring quick iteration and hands-on problem solving.
- Mechanical Aptitude: Strong understanding of fundamental mechanical principles (statics, dynamics, material science) and practical skills using basic shop tools.
- Blueprint Reading: Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings and apply geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) concepts.
- Experience in university or competitive engineering teams such as SAE Aero, SAE Auto, Formula SAE, Design Build Fly, AIAA competitions, or similar.
Bonus
- Finite Element Analysis (FEA): Prior exposure to or experience using FEA tools (e.g., ANSYS, SolidWorks Simulation) to analyze stress, strain, and vibrational characteristics of components is a significant advantage.
