Electrical or Embedded Controls Engineer
Boom Supersonic
About the Role
At Boom, you'll own some of the hardest electrical and embedded systems problems from day one. We hire a small number of extraordinary early-career engineers ready for a significant challenge. You will own real pieces of the electrical and controls system, whether that's designing instrumentation for an engine test, developing embedded controls, integrating sensors, or bringing up hardware that has never existed before. We are building two engines: Superpower (42 MW gas turbine for AI data centers) and Symphony (medium-bypass turbofan for Mach 1.7 cruise). This involves building electrical and embedded systems that reliably monitor, control, and protect complex hardware under demanding operating conditions.
Key Responsibilities
- Own a defined portion of Superpower's electrical or embedded controls architecture – from instrumentation and sensors to embedded controllers, wiring architecture, and hardware integration.
- Design, build, and validate electrical systems that generate the data needed to develop, control, and protect the engine.
- Partner closely with propulsion, mechanical, software, manufacturing, and test engineers to integrate electrical hardware into a first-of-its-kind gas turbine platform.
- Develop and troubleshoot embedded hardware and control systems during engine testing, quickly identifying root causes and improving system performance.
- Help build reliable systems that connect hardware, software, and test – from first prototype through engine validation.
Requirements & Tech Stack
- Embedded controllers operating in millisecond time scales.
- Fast-transient power systems.
- Instrumentation and controls for gas turbines.
- Experience with embedded programming, instrumentation, microcontrollers, electrical design, PCB development, sensors, or hardware integration.
- Comfortable working in the lab with oscilloscopes, multimeters, logic analyzers, and real hardware.
- A track record of taking ownership, finishing difficult projects, and solving problems.
Qualifications
- A degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Embedded Systems, or a closely related field.
- Internship, research, or project experience designing, integrating, or testing electrical, embedded, or control systems.
- Demonstrated experience through:
- Designing custom electronics.
- Building embedded systems.
- Programming microcontrollers.
- Leading Formula SAE, Robotics, Rocketry, or another hardware-focused competition team.
- Owning electrical or controls work during an internship.
- Enjoyment in moving between hardware and software and understanding how the entire system works.
- Preference for debugging hardware in the lab over sitting in conference rooms.
- Desire for ownership, not hand-holding.
- Energized by hard problems.
- Satisfaction in seeing designed components come to life.
Work Location: 100% onsite at Boom's headquarters located at 6803 S Tucson Way, Centennial, CO 80112.
Base Salary Range: $102,000 - $128,000 per year.
ITAR Requirement: Applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual, or eligible to obtain required authorizations.
