About the Role

The Qnity Global Automation team is seeking an entry-level Automation & Process Control Engineer in Delaware to support Integrated Operations. This role is designed for a recent engineering graduate who wants to build a career in process automation and control. Working alongside experienced engineers, the selected candidate will support the design, configuration, commissioning, and improvement of process control systems for chemical and electronic materials manufacturing processes, ranging from upgrades of existing control systems to new installations. Structured mentoring, formal training, and regular site exposure are built into the role, with an emphasis on developing expertise in process control systems and process safety over the first several years.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the EHS organization by participating in investigations and completing assigned action items.
  • Learn and apply the Qnity S21A Process Safety standard for the Integrated Operations organization.
  • Participate in Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs), Layers of Protection Analysis (LOPA), and Safety Instrumented System (SIS) lifecycle activities during design and execution under the guidance of a senior engineer.
  • Work with site stakeholders to understand production challenges and develop automated solutions that minimize impact on production and remain minimally invasive to the external customer change protocol.
  • Assist in developing and documenting process control standards, and help deploy proven technology across the organization.
  • Provide engineering support, with mentoring from senior team members, for:
  • Automation Assessments
  • Capital projects including Functional Design Requirements, Design Reviews, Construction, Acceptance Tests, Commissioning, and Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSRs)
  • Site Automation Evaluations/Improvements
  • Contribute to control system design work for site projects, including P&IDs, control narratives, instrument specifications, I/O lists, and loop drawings.
  • Support collaboration with external suppliers during the design, configuration, and factory and site acceptance testing of control systems and instrumentation.
  • Build working knowledge of DCS/PLC configuration, electrical and instrumentation design, and industrial network architecture.
  • Develop hands-on skills with process control systems and field instrumentation, including control loop tuning, alarm management, interlocks, and batch/sequence control.
  • Assist project leaders on multiple concurrent projects while building project management and execution fundamentals.
  • Help prepare and gather documentation for Management of Change (MOC) reviews at the sites, including updates to Process Safety Information (PSI).

Requirements & Tech Stack

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemical, Electrical, Mechanical, or Control Systems Engineering.
  • Coursework, capstone, co-op, or internship experience in process automation, process control, instrumentation, or control system programming.
  • Exposure to DCS or PLC platforms (such as Emerson DeltaV, Rockwell ControlLogix, or Siemens) and control programming.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD or instrumentation design tools is a plus.
  • Interest in learning chemical and batch manufacturing processes, P&ID interpretation, and process control strategies such as PID control, interlocks, and ISA-88 batch control.
  • Able and willing to travel to manufacturing sites (average 30% of time).
  • Interest in learning process safety practices, including Process Hazard Analysis (PHA/HAZOP), Layers of Protection Analysis (LOPA), and Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) per IEC 61511/ISA-84.
  • Familiarity with instrumentation, control panels, field wiring, or hands-on build and commissioning experience.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a challenging, diverse team environment.
  • Willingness to learn quickly, ask questions, and accept coaching.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Highly motivated problem solver.
