About the Role

Catalyst Power is seeking a curious, analytical, and technically minded Business Intelligence Analyst to join our growing team. This early-career role is ideal for someone who enjoys working with data, solving business problems, and learning how energy markets operate. The Analyst will help turn complex market, customer, risk, and operational data into reliable reporting and actionable insights. You will partner with portfolio management, operations, finance, sales, and technology teams to improve data quality, build scalable reporting, automate recurring work, and support informed decision-making. The role offers broad exposure to the power, natural gas, and renewable energy industries and room to grow across multiple areas of BI.

Key Responsibilities

  • Research and analyze power, natural gas, renewable energy, and related market information to support business and portfolio decisions.
  • Develop a practical understanding of energy-market transactions, pricing, portfolio workflows, and the data that supports them.
  • Prepare, validate, and enhance recurring risk, credit exposure, valuation, and performance reporting.
  • Investigate variances across internal data, market sources, and third-party datasets; document findings and help resolve data-quality issues.
  • Use SQL, spreadsheets, and BI tools to combine, analyze, and visualize large datasets and identify trends, correlations, exceptions, and potential business drivers.
  • Build and maintain dashboards, reports, and data models that provide clear, timely, and consistent insights to internal stakeholders and clients.
  • Automate manual or repetitive processes using various tools within Catalyst's technology stack.
  • Partner with data and software engineering resources to translate business needs into scalable datasets, reporting solutions, and workflow improvements.
  • Create clear documentation for data definitions, report logic, processes, controls, and recurring deliverables.
  • Respond to data and reporting requests and provide dependable day-to-day analytical support to portfolio managers and other business partners.
  • Continuously look for opportunities to improve reporting accuracy, efficiency, usability, and self-service access to information.

Requirements & Tech Stack

  • Bachelor's degree in analytics, information systems, computer science, economics, finance, mathematics, engineering, data science, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Strong spreadsheet skills, including formulas, lookups, pivot tables, data validation, and clear chart creation.
  • Experience building reports or dashboards in a BI or visualization platform such as Power BI, Tableau, Looker, Metabase, or a comparable tool.
  • Solid SQL fundamentals (joins, aggregations, filtering, and ideally window functions) in any dialect.
  • Ability to evaluate data critically, recognize inconsistencies, troubleshoot issues, and communicate conclusions clearly.
  • Strong organization and diligence, especially when producing recurring or time-sensitive reports.
  • Comfort collaborating across teams and supporting stakeholders through email, messaging, video meetings, and other remote-work channels.
  • Interest in energy markets and a willingness to learn industry terminology, workflows, and commercial concepts.

Helpful, but Not Required

  • Experience with energy, commodities, financial markets, risk management, retail energy, or renewable energy datasets.
  • Experience with Python, R, VBA, APIs, or workflow-automation tools, or with a BI tool’s modeling or calculation layer (e.g., DAX, LookML, or Metabase models).
  • Exposure to cloud data warehouses or platforms such as Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery, Redshift, or ClickHouse.
  • Familiarity with data modeling, ETL/ELT concepts, version control, data governance, or automated quality checks.
