Research Scientist
IBM
About the Role
At IBM Research, we are the innovation engine of IBM, exploring what's next in computing and shaping the technologies the world will rely on tomorrow. From advancing AI and hybrid cloud to pioneering practical quantum computing, we anticipate challenges and unlock new opportunities for clients, partners, and society. Working in Research means joining a team that accelerates discovery at the intersection of high-performance computing, AI, quantum, and cloud. You'll collaborate with leading scientists, engineers, and visionaries to push boundaries and turn ideas into reality.
Your Role and Responsibilities
As a Research Scientist in Superconducting Qubit Theory, you will:
- Develop theoretical models and simulations that drive the design and operations of IBM Quantum processors.
- Apply expertise in areas such as black-box quantization, network synthesis, matrix product states, or related methods to model novel superconducting qubit devices.
- Develop advanced models to identify and characterize emerging error mechanisms.
- Simulate increasingly large and complex multi-qubit systems.
- Uncover the physical processes that limit device performance.
- Connect theory and measurement, working closely with experimental teams.
- Use insights from both theory and measurement to improve qubits and shape the next generation of IBM Quantum processors.
Requirements & Tech Stack
- PhD in physics, electrical engineering, or related field.
- Experience in superconducting qubit theory.
Preferred Experience
- Post Doc or professional experience.
- Experience in numerical methods for large Hilbert space simulations.
