About the Role

This position is for a New Graduate RN Residency in the Medical Cardiac Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU) at Boston Medical Center (BMC), with a start date in March 2027. The program is designed to support the transition from nursing student to a professional nurse, focusing on developing strong clinical judgment, critical-thinking skills, and confidence. The IMCU cares for complex cardiac, medical, pulmonary, and renal patients, including those with congestive heart failure (CHF) requiring intensive fluid management.

What You Will Learn

As a new graduate RN in this residency, you will develop competency in caring for patients with:

  • Complex cardiac and medical conditions requiring intermediate-level monitoring
  • Congestive heart failure (CHF) and complex volume-management needs
  • Aggressive diuresis and fluid-volume management
  • Multiple cardiac drips, including management of up to five
  • Patients transitioning to and from the ICU
  • Patients transferring to and from medical-surgical floors based on changes in acuity
  • Tracheostomies and mechanical ventilation
  • Chest tubes and pericardial drains
  • TAVR and other post-procedural cardiac patients
  • Pulmonary hypertension and complex cardiopulmonary disease
  • Peritoneal dialysis
  • Patient-controlled analgesia (PCA)
  • High-risk post-procedure patients requiring close assessment and monitoring
  • Complex medical patients with multiple comorbidities and rapidly changing clinical conditions

Learning Environment

The IMCU offers a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between traditional medical-surgical nursing and critical care. Nurses develop the ability to recognize subtle changes in patient condition, prioritize competing clinical needs, communicate effectively with providers, and intervene early when a patient's condition begins to deteriorate. Frequent patient movement across acuity levels provides valuable experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide nursing assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, evaluation, and coordination of care.
  • Manage patients across the health care continuum.
  • Accountable for clinical, educational, quality, and fiscal patient care outcomes.
  • Follow established agency policies, procedures, protocols, guidelines, and standards of practice.

Requirements & Tech Stack

  • Active BLS/CPR for Healthcare Providers
  • Flu Vaccine (required prior to start)
  • RN licensure in the state of MA (preferred prior to start date)
  • Graduates from nursing school within the twelve (12) months before their date of hire.

Qualifications

  • Curious, motivated, and eager to learn.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced and highly dynamic environment.
  • Interested in cardiac, medical, pulmonary, and critical-care nursing.
  • Strong communicators and collaborative team members.
  • Able to prioritize and organize care for multiple complex patients.
  • Committed to patient safety and evidence-based practice.
  • Resilient, adaptable, and willing to ask questions.
  • Passionate about developing their clinical skills and professional practice.

Commitment

  • Two-year commitment required after the residency program.
  • Nurses new to Critical Care are expected to remain in their role for a minimum of 2 years from the date of hire.
  • New graduate nurses in all other BMC practice areas are expected to remain in their roles for a minimum of 1 year from the completion of their orientation.

Compensation Range

$38.05 - $75.33
