About the Role

Chewy is seeking a motivated Software Engineer I to join our Supply Chain IT Domain Services team. This team supports critical services for inventory visibility, purchase order and transfer workflows, electronic data exchange, vendor compliance, and operational analytics across Chewy’s supply chain network. These systems involve distributed services and data pipelines for both real-time and batch processing. As an early career engineer, you will work with experienced engineers to design, build, test, deploy, and support reliable software. You will take ownership of well-scoped work while developing strong engineering, operational, and business fundamentals. This role contributes across backend services, APIs, data workflows, and user-facing applications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain software using Java, Spring Boot, AWS, and related technologies with guidance from experienced engineers.
  • Deliver results on well-scoped features and technical improvements from implementation through testing, deployment, and production validation.
  • Build and support APIs, event-driven integrations, data workflows, and, when needed, user-facing applications.
  • Write clear, maintainable code and participate in code reviews, design discussions, and team engineering standards.
  • Create automated unit and integration tests and help improve the team’s testing and delivery practices.
  • Operate in the details by using logs, metrics, traces, dashboards, and runbooks to troubleshoot issues and improve reliability and performance.
  • Participate in production support and on-call responsibilities with documented procedures, mentoring, and team support.
  • Use approved AI-assisted development tools responsibly to accelerate learning, coding, testing, documentation, and troubleshooting while validating generated output.
  • Put customers first by partnering with product, program, business, and engineering teams to understand needs and deliver practical supply chain solutions.
  • Apply spec-driven development (SDD) practices, with guidance, to translate requirements and acceptance criteria into reviewed designs, implementation plans, discrete tasks, tests, and delivered code.
  • Act as an owner for assigned work and contribute to operational excellence by improving documentation, observability, support readiness, and production stability.

Requirements & Tech Stack

  • Foundational programming experience through professional work, internships, co-op assignments, academic projects, or substantial personal projects.
  • Working knowledge of Java or another object-oriented programming language and the ability to learn Java and Spring Boot.
  • Understanding of data structures, algorithms, object-oriented design, debugging, and software testing fundamentals.
  • Familiarity with relational databases, SQL, REST APIs, source control, and modern software development practices.
  • Exposure to cloud-based application development and an interest in building on AWS.
  • Ability to learn unfamiliar systems, ask effective questions, discuss alternatives openly, apply feedback, and commit to team decisions once aligned.
  • Exposure to SDD workflows.
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively across a team.
  • Accountability for assigned work and willingness to communicate progress, risks, and blockers early.
  • Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced environment.

AI And Modern Development Experience

  • Using approved AI-assisted tools such as Cursor, Codex, or Copilot to improve development efficiency.
  • Validating AI-generated code, tests, and documentation before use.
  • Using reviewed specifications as the source of truth for AI-assisted planning and implementation, then validating the result against requirements, acceptance criteria, and tests.
  • Recognizing when human review, security controls, and engineering judgment are required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Bonus

  • Internship, co-op, or project experience developing cloud-based applications with AWS.
  • Exposure to Spring Boot, microservices, event-driven systems, data pipelines, or full-stack development using React or Vue.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, containers, observability tools, or agile delivery practices.
  • Interest in supply chain, logistics, inventory systems, e-commerce, or high-volume operational systems.
