Systems Engineer 1, Robotics & Automation
Siemens Healthineers
About the Role
Join our team at Siemens Healthineers as a Systems Engineer 1 – Robotics & Automation, where you will help design, integrate, and validate robotic systems that advance the next generation of laboratory diagnostics. Working alongside experienced systems, hardware, and software engineers, you will apply collaborative robotics, sensing, and automation to make complex laboratory workflows more precise, reliable, and efficient. This position is ideal for an early-career engineer with hands-on robotics experience who is excited to work at the intersection of mechanical, electrical, and software engineering to bring robotic systems from concept to reliable operation in a regulated medical-device environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Robotics & Automation
- Program, configure, and tune robotic arms to execute precise, repeatable multi-step workflows in a laboratory setting.
- Characterize and improve robot accuracy and repeatability, and apply calibration and measurement techniques to achieve tight positioning tolerances.
- Develop and optimize motion paths and parameters to balance cycle time, reliability, and precision.
- Integrate vision-guided perception and robust grasping for manipulation of objects in real-world laboratory conditions.
- Use simulation and modeling tools to prototype and de-risk robotic behaviors before deployment on physical hardware.
- Design and iterate mechanical fixtures, adapters, and end-effectors to support robust robotic handling, including rapid prototyping.
- Systems Engineering & Integration
- Support system-level design, integration, and verification of robotic subsystems within larger diagnostic and lab-automation platforms.
- Translate product and process requirements into technical specifications, interface definitions, and structured test plans.
- Build data-collection and analysis tools to quantify robot and process performance, and communicate results to cross-functional stakeholders.
- Perform root-cause analysis and troubleshooting across mechanical, electrical, and software domains.
- Contribute to design reviews, risk assessments, and engineering documentation within a regulated (FDA / ISO 13485) environment.
Requirements & Tech Stack
- Bachelor’s degree in robotics, biomedical, mechanical, electrical, systems, or a related engineering discipline (May 2027 graduation).
- Hands-on experience programming and integrating robotic arms – including configuration, calibration, and motion planning.
- Practical experience with the Robot Operating System (ROS2) and integrating robots, sensors, actuators, and microcontrollers (e.g., Arduino) into working platforms.
- Strong programming skills in Python and MATLAB for control, data collection, and analysis.
- Working knowledge of systems and controls fundamentals and the ability to reason about how subsystems interact as a whole.
- Experience with CAD / design tools such as SOLIDWORKS, Siemens NX, or Autodesk Inventor and rapid prototyping (3D printing) for fixtures and end-effectors.
- Familiarity with computer vision / perception for robotics (e.g., depth sensing, object detection, OpenCV).
- Exposure to agentic / AI-assisted programming – using AI coding assistants and agent-based tools to accelerate development, prototyping, and automation of engineering tasks.
- Strong analytical rigor, curiosity, and structured problem-solving; comfort characterizing and improving system performance with data.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical results clearly.
- Demonstrated leadership, teamwork, and project-coordination experience (academic, research, or extracurricular).
Preferred / Nice To Have
- Experience with robot simulation and modeling environments.
- Exposure to robot kinematics and control of multi-degree-of-freedom arms.
- Experience building or orchestrating AI agents / agentic workflows (e.g., LLM-based copilots or automation agents) to support engineering productivity.
- Research experience applying engineering or ML methods to biomedical, physiological, or sensor data.
- Wet-lab or clinical exposure (e.g., tissue culture, assays) that complements engineering skills.
- Interest in medical-device development, quality systems, and regulated design processes.
