Turbomachinery Engineer
Boom Supersonic
About the Role
At Boom Supersonic, early-career engineers are given significant responsibility from their first year. This role focuses on tackling complex turbomachinery problems for the development of two engines: Superpower (a 42 MW gas turbine for AI data centers) and Symphony (a medium-bypass turbofan for Mach 1.7 cruise). The role demands ownership and a proactive approach to problem-solving, as established playbooks for the propulsion challenges are scarce.
Key Responsibilities
- Own a defined piece of the propulsion system, from 1D cycle performance and 3D CFD modeling to fuel nozzle design, secondary air systems, rotordynamics, or variable guide vane geometry, with accountability for the outcome.
- Work directly on the test stand and in the shop with mechanical, materials, and controls teams to integrate propulsion concepts into operational gas turbine hardware.
- Analyze thermodynamic cycles, internal flow networks, and turbomachinery physics to establish operating limits for machines intended for near-term service.
- Support engine testing operations in real time, evaluating data against performance models, troubleshooting anomalies, and driving hardware design revisions.
- Partner with design and manufacturing engineers to optimize gas-path components for both extreme aerothermal loads and production manufacturability.
Requirements & Tech Stack
- 1D/3D CFD tools (e.g., Ansys Fluent, STAR-CCM+, or OpenFOAM)
- Thermodynamics/cycle analysis tools (e.g., NPSS, GasTurb, or pyCycle)
- Finite element analysis (FEA) tools (e.g., Abaqus, Ansys Mechanical, Nastran, or CalculiX)
- GPU-accelerated CFD
- Turbine blade flow bench
- Engine test stands
Qualifications
- A degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent hands-on propulsion/thermal-fluids experience.
- At least one internship, co-op, or equivalent experience analyzing, designing, or testing real-world propulsion, fluid, or thermal systems.
- Hands-on modeling and analytical experience.
- A strong understanding of core propulsion fundamentals: thermodynamics, compressible fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and combustion.
- A demonstrated track record of completing challenging tasks.
- Experience with extraordinary early-career achievements such as designing rocket injectors, leading competition teams (e.g., Formula SAE, AIAA Design/Build/Fly) with ownership of propulsion, aerothermal, or fluid networks, or performing advanced propulsion work during internships.
Work Location
- 100% onsite at Boom's headquarters: 6803 S Tucson Way, Centennial, CO 80112.
Compensation
- Base Salary Range: $102,000 - $128,000 per year.
Additional Benefits
- Long-term incentives/equity
- Flexible PTO policy
- On-site meals
- Gym access
ITAR Requirement
- Must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain required U.S. Department of State authorizations.
- Must be eligible to access export-controlled information and technology.
