Materials & Manufacturing Process Engineer
Boom Supersonic
About the Role
At Boom, you will own the hardest materials and process challenges from day one. We hire a small number of extraordinary engineers ready for a significant challenge. Entry-level Materials and Manufacturing Process Engineers are given real scope from day one – a critical alloy qualification, an advanced heat-treatment protocol, a joining technique, or a coating failure without a solution, and are held accountable for the outcome. We are building two engines: Superpower for AI data centers and Symphony, a medium-bypass turbofan for Mach 1.7 cruise. This role involves creating the materials and manufacturing processes that turn ambitious designs into functional hardware.
Key Responsibilities
- Own a defined piece of the Materials Process domain: material qualification, investment casing, advanced joining methods, surface coatings, or non-destructive testing – with accountability for the outcome.
- Interact across disciplines (design, propulsion, and manufacturing) and physical spaces (office, lab, shop floor) to move from concept to high-performance hardware.
- Characterize and validate extreme-environment materials designed to withstand mechanical and thermal stresses of gas turbines and high-Mach flight programs.
- Perform rapid failure analysis of testing anomalies using internal labs, including SEM, to find root causes and iterate solutions.
- Plan and execute test campaigns, including mechanical testing of superalloys for LCF/HCF and creep, DOEs for metallic additive, and development testing of novel investment casting technologies.
- Help scope, procure, install, and commission new equipment, and then use it and train others on it.
Requirements & Tech Stack
- Degree in Materials Science & Engineering, Metallurgy, Mechanical, Aerospace, or Chemical Engineering – or equivalent hands-on hardware experience.
- At least one internship or co-op involving real-world engineering materials, testing, or process characterization.
- Hands-on lab or shop experience required: operating mechanical test frames, metallographic sample prep equipment, heat-treat furnaces, or additive manufacturing machines.
- Fundamental understanding of materials behavior: microstructural strengthening, fatigue failure mechanisms, corrosion resistance, and high-temperature oxidation.
- Track record of finishing hard things, both academically and outside of school.
- Experience with next-gen superalloys at extreme thermal limits and additive microstructures.
- Experience with high-durability coatings for continuous, multi-year duty cycles.
Qualifications
- You have done something extraordinary early – built and characterized real hardware, led a competition team focusing on advanced materials, or completed M&P lab work in an internship that most engineers don't encounter for years.
- You love building and want to work long, smart, and hard to create things with real impact.
- You desire ownership, not guidance.
- You are energized by increasingly difficult problems.
- You are uncomfortable waiting for others to find answers.
- You find the metallurgy lab, cleanroom, and shop floor more interesting than a conference room.
Work Location
Internships require 100% onsite at Boom's headquarters located at 6803 S Tucson Way, Centennial, CO 80112.
Compensation
The Base Salary Range for this position is $102,000 - $128,000 per year.
ITAR Requirement
Applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual, or eligible to obtain required U.S. Department of State authorizations. Candidates must be eligible to access export-controlled information and technology.
