About Open the Books
Open the Books is a project of American Transparency, a 501(c)(3) dedicated to educating the public on waste, fraud, and abuse and fighting for real-time spending transparency. They operate the largest private database of public spending in history, containing billions of data points on federal salaries, line-by-line federal spending, state “checkbooks,” state-level salaries and pension funds, and spending across over 17,000 municipalities.
About the Role
The Data Analysis Intern will brainstorm and develop creative research projects leveraging Open the Books' proprietary database to tell unique stories about government waste. The role focuses on using data comparisons to influence the conversation about wasteful spending at federal, state, and local levels. This is a full-time, fully remote role.
Key Responsibilities
- Work with the Deputy Policy Director to understand available datasets.
- Analyze relevant datasets with the Deputy Policy Director to draw conclusions.
- Brainstorm and pitch comparative analyses to offer taxpayers new insights into public spending efficacy.
Requirements & Tech Stack
- Microsoft Excel proficiency.
- Interest in further training on data analytics tools.
- Experience with visualization tools like Tableau, PowerBI, or comparable tools is a plus.
- Willingness to proactively report progress and pitch ideas in a remote environment.
- Enthusiasm for using data to tell surprising stories about public policy outcomes.
- Alignment with the vision to hold government accountable for tax dollar use and steer public spending back toward founding principles.
- Candidates with an interest in quantitative research and those who follow the news cycle closely are a fit.
Qualifications
- Eligible candidates will be geographically located in and authorized to work in the United States.
- Available every Thursday from 1-4:00 PM ET for virtual professional development training.
- Available for the in-person summit at Stand Together's Headquarters in Arlington, VA on June 3-4.
