About the Role

The Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) engineer/tech will be responsible for developing high quality detailed design packages, providing engineering procurement and field technical support to implement those designs, and providing expertise for troubleshooting and technical assessments of plant systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Developing conceptual engineering deliverables such as cost-estimating bills of material and labor-hour estimates, statements of work, and design criteria.
  • Preparing design output deliverables including conduit/cable schedules, conduit/equipment plans, wiring/connection/schematic diagrams, instrument loop diagrams, various sections/elevations/detail drawings, calculations, instrument datasheets, and construction specifications.
  • Applying technical expertise and principles in the electrical engineering field, with a focus on instrumentation/controls for process measurement and control.
  • Developing industrial control panel assembly drawings, control system network architecture diagrams, and control logic for both batch and continuous processes using conventional analog instrumentation, modern digital control systems, and programmable logic controller/human-machine interfaces (PLCs/HMIs).
  • Developing process control system narratives, aiding in the development of process software requirements, and providing input to Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
  • Providing self-performed technical solutions through the application of established engineering practices and national consensus codes and standards.
  • Routinely performing walkdowns in existing plant facilities to generate design documents and provide field support to craft personnel.
  • Working as a team member of a multi-discipline, integrated project team.

Requirements & Tech Stack

  • Bachelor’s degree: No experience.
  • Eight or more years of relevant education, training, and/or progressive experience may satisfy educational and years-of-experience requirements.
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering/Physical Science from an EAC ABET accredited program or designated equivalents.
  • OR MS in Engineering /Physical science.
  • OR PhD in Engineering /Physical science.
  • Minimum cumulative GPA:
  • 3.0/4.0 for Bachelor's degree
  • 3.3 for Master's degree
  • 3.5 for PhD
  • DOE O 426.2A requirements: Baccalaureate in engineering or related scientific major, 2 years job-related, and 1-year nuclear experience; or a DOE O 426.2A alternative. DOE 426.2A experience requirements can be satisfied following employment.
  • Security Clearance: Requires a Q clearance. Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.
  • Additional Requirements: May require entry into Material Access Areas (MAA) and participation in the Human Reliability Program (10 C.F.R. Part 712), requiring a DOE counterintelligence evaluation and potentially a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination. May be a “designated position” (10 C.F.R. Part 709).
  • Pre-employment: Candidates will be required to pass a pre-placement physical, drug screening, and background investigation.
  • U.S. Citizenship is a requirement for security clearance applicants.

Preferred Job Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.
  • Two or more years of instrumentation and controls design engineering experience.
  • A Professional Engineering License (PE) is preferred but not required.
  • Knowledgeable in respective technical standards, principles, theories, concepts, and techniques.
  • Ability to evaluate and provide feedback on technical operating procedures, design drawings, design requirements, and facility systems, structures, and components.
  • Ability to perform technical evaluations of processes and provide well-written, technical feedback.
