Junior Software Developer
Lulius Innovation
About the Role
Lulius Innovation builds software products for Army Aviation and other parts of the military, focusing on readiness, training, and records tools. We are a small, veteran-owned team hiring a Junior Software Developer to build alongside us. We value understanding and ownership of all code, including AI-assisted development.
Key Responsibilities
- Build features across the full stack: React and Next.js interfaces, Node.js and Express services, and PostgreSQL data models.
- Write code, using AI coding tools for planning, testing, and refactoring, and review every change.
- Write and maintain tests, fix bugs, and track problems across the browser, API, and database.
- Build, run, and debug products locally in Docker and Docker Compose.
- Work in Git with team branching, commit, and pull-request practices, and participate in code reviews.
- Write code that adheres to a DoD security posture: input validation, access control, audit trails, and no secrets in the repo.
- Learn the military mission to build necessary tools for operators, maintainers, and commanders.
Requirements & Tech Stack
Our products are containerized JavaScript (front to back), PostgreSQL, Tailwind and shadcn/ui, Zustand for state, and Highcharts for visualization, all running in Docker on Linux. You need fundamental skills and the curiosity to learn the rest.
Qualifications
- Working knowledge of JavaScript: promises and async/await, modules, closures, and the event loop in Node.js.
- Hands-on React: components, props and state, hooks, and rendering. Next.js experience is a strong plus.
- Node.js fundamentals: building REST APIs, handling requests and errors, and managing configuration.
- Basic SQL and relational data: ability to write a join, read a schema, and reason about migrations.
- Experience using AI coding assistants and the judgment to verify their output.
- Comfort with Git, the command line, Linux, and containers, or a clear willingness to learn.
- A project you built (with or without AI) that you can explain line by line (e.g., GitHub repo, deployed app, class project, internship or bootcamp work).
- Eligibility for a Government background check and CAC issuance for DoD systems.
- Military experience is a plus but not required.
- Veterans, transitioning service members, Guard and Reserve members are strongly encouraged to apply.
DoD SkillBridge Opportunity
Lulius is a DoD SkillBridge partner for service members in their final 180 days of service.
Location
- Full-time position.
- Based in Reno/Tahoe, Nevada, or Daleville, Alabama (near Fort Rucker).
- Remote option available for qualified U.S.-based candidates.
- Occasional travel to Fort Rucker, Redstone Arsenal, and supported units.
