Specimen Processor

About the Role

Specimen Processors are responsible for receiving, preparing, and processing most samples that come into the department. This role operates on an overnight shift, Monday–Saturday, five days per week, with two scheduled days off. Weekend coverage is required.

• Shift Time: 11PM-7:30AM Mon-Fri, 8PM-4:30AM Sat
• Target Pay: $18.41 per hour

Key Responsibilities

• Receives and prepares samples for laboratory analyses.
• Accurately process standard requisitions per approved procedures at expected rates.
• Removes specimens from transport bags, enters patient data, labels samples, and aliquots as needed for multiple testing.
• Keeps inventory of samples after testing by scanning into storage racks.
• Searches lab for any samples not scanned into storage racks.
• Sorts samples for distribution throughout the lab (Coggins, cytology, etc.).
• Scans tubes into storage racks and enters specimen data into a database to verify information accuracy.
• Accessions various sample types for processing.
• Checks all trash containers within the Specimen Processing department when assigned.
• Assists other lab personnel with specimen storage.
• Ensures Turn Around Times (TAT’s) are met.
• Follows applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s), including safety and quality procedures.
• Maintains a clean and organized work area.
• Restocks supplies as needed.
• Consults with senior peers on non-complex specimen processing tasks to learn through experience.
• All other duties as assigned.

Requirements & Tech Stack

• Proficiency in the English language
• Data Entry skills
• Personal computer skills, including strong typing ability and proficient use of Microsoft Office.
• Laboratory equipment
• PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
• National Hazard Communication Standards

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required, with science-related classes.
• 0-1 years related work experience preferred.
• Attention to detail and organized with the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
• Reasoning and analytical skills to resolve issues.
• Communication skills, both verbal and written.
• Positive, can-do attitude.

Working Conditions

• Stationary Position: must be able to remain in a stationary position for up to 2 hours.
• Constantly operates a computer and other lab equipment accurately and efficiently.
• Occasionally required to bend, kneel, stoop, or crouch.
• Required to lift, move, and carry up to 50 lbs.
• Extended hours may be needed.
• Laboratory environments with potential biohazards present that are mitigated by the mandatory use of PPE.
• Work under close to moderate supervision.
• Potential for exposure to agents known to cause zoonotic disease in humans and use of potentially hazardous chemicals.
