Cloud Hardware Development Engineer I
Amazon
About The Team
Annapurna Labs designs custom silicon for Amazon, including server processors like Graviton and machine learning accelerators such as Trainium and Inferentia, as well as the Nitro system for EC2. The team owns the full stack, from silicon to the supporting software (compilers, runtimes, drivers, and frameworks). Annapurna Labs has hardware teams across various systems and disciplines, aiming to place individuals on teams aligned with their interests and strengths.
Example Teams and Focus Areas
- Board and system design for ML servers and accelerator platforms
- Firmware and low-level software development (BMC, device firmware)
- Hardware bring-up, validation, and post-silicon testing
- High-speed interconnect and signal integrity
- System-level integration across compute, networking, and storage
Key Responsibilities
As a Cloud Hardware Development Engineer I, you will contribute to real hardware development work, which may include:
- Supporting the design, bring-up, and validation of hardware systems and subsystems
- Developing firmware or low-level software that interfaces directly with hardware
- Debugging hardware-software integration issues in the lab using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and other bench equipment
- Writing and running tests to validate hardware functionality, performance, and reliability
- Collaborating with ASIC, systems, and software teams to take hardware from design through deployment
- Documenting your work and presenting findings to the team

- Coursework or project experience in digital logic design and computer architecture
- Familiarity with a hardware description language (Verilog, SystemVerilog, or VHDL)
- Understanding of fundamental digital design concepts: combinational and sequential logic, finite state machines, timing, and clocking
Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree with a focus on embedded systems, computer architecture, or hardware design
- Hands-on experience with firmware development or bare-metal programming
- Experience debugging hardware in a lab environment ( oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, protocol analyzers)
- Familiarity with communication protocols (PCIe, I2C, SPI, UART, Ethernet)
- Scripting experience (Python, Perl, shell) for test automation
- Prior internship, research, or lab experience in hardware development, embedded systems, or firmware
