Role: Electronic Hardware and PCB Designer

Location: Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, Mumbai

Category: Project Research Staff

About the Project

A Government-funded project focused on the development and demonstration of drone and allied technologies. The initiative leverages advanced technologies and infrastructure with applications spanning various sectors. It aims to foster strong industry-academia collaborations and drive innovation. Comprehensive training programs are an integral component for awareness and proficiency in drone operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design highly integrated embedded and RF boards used for drone flight controller systems.
  • Design and simulate analog/digital circuits (e.g., power regulators, IMUs, barometers, microcontrollers, communication interfaces).
  • Design multilayer PCBs with considerations for signal integrity, thermal management, power distribution, and EMI/EMC.
  • Collaborate with system architects and embedded engineers to define PCB requirements.
  • Design for testability (DFT) and compliance with aerospace-grade standards.
  • Work with fabricators and assembly vendors for prototyping and manufacturing.
  • Integrate feedback from field tests into board revision cycles.
  • Provide detailed technical documentation, including specifications, test reports, and user guides.
  • Perform any other assigned work as per requirement.

Requirements & Tech Stack

  • Experience with electronic circuit designing and testing.
  • Experience with microcontroller-based designs.
  • Experience with sensor interfacing.
  • Experience with communication buses: SPI, I2C, UART, CAN.
  • Experience designing power electronic boards (e.g., SMPS, DC-DC converters, filter circuitry).
  • Experience designing multilayer PCBs with proficiency in industry-standard PCB designing tools like Altium, OrCAD, Cadence.
  • Strong understanding of high-speed design principles, impedance control, and differential pair routing.
  • Experience in RF design and signal routing.
  • Hands-on testing using sophisticated lab equipment like spectrum analyzer.
  • Experience with EMI/EMC mitigation techniques.
  • Experience with environmental robustness (vibration, temperature).
  • Ability to debug hardware using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and other lab tools.
  • Good soldering skills even with small pitch components.
  • Knowledge of signal integrity simulation tools (e.g., HyperLynx) is a plus.

Qualifications

  • PhD with relevant experience
  • OR MTech / ME or equivalent degree with relevant experience
  • OR BTech / BE or equivalent degree with relevant experience
