Hardware Design Engineer Intern
Emerson
About the Role
Emerson's Process Systems and Solutions business is seeking a Hardware Design Intern for Summer 2027. This internship offers hands-on experience in designing the physical hardware for automation products that measure and control critical industrial processes. Interns will work with experienced engineers on a summer project drawn from the company's real backlog.
Key Responsibilities
- Partner with electrical and mechanical engineers and a mentor on a summer project contributing to the hardware behind DeltaV controllers, I/O, and field devices.
- Contribute to schematic capture, component placement, and PCB layout from concept to a build-ready design.
- Support mechanical design work such as enclosures, mounting, and thermal management, and evaluate designs for manufacturability.
- Use simulation and analysis tools to evaluate circuit, thermal, or mechanical performance.
- Work hands-on in the lab to bring up, measure, and troubleshoot prototype hardware using standard test equipment.
- Participate in design reviews and testing.
- Take part in agile ceremonies, including sprint planning and retrospectives, Hackathons, Tech Talks, and Communities of Practice.
- Document work and present project results at the end of the summer.
Requirements & Tech Stack
- Currently enrolled in an accredited college/university and returning to school following the internship.
- Pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Coursework or project experience with CAD tools (electrical schematic capture/PCB layout or mechanical 3D modeling).
- Legal authorization to work in the United States. Sponsorship will not be provided.
Preferred Qualifications
- Junior or Senior standing.
- Experience with schematic capture and PCB layout tools such as Altium Designer, Cadence OrCAD or Allegro, Mentor/Siemens Xpedition, or KiCad.
- Experience with mechanical CAD tools such as SolidWorks, Creo, NX, or AutoCAD.
- Familiarity with circuit simulation and analysis tools such as SPICE, or with thermal and structural simulation.
- Exposure to digital and analog circuit design fundamentals, including power supply design and component selection.
- Exposure to FPGA design and verification using an HDL such as VHDL or Verilog.
- Understanding of signal integrity, power distribution, grounding, or thermal management considerations in board design.
- Interest in design for manufacturability, enclosure design, or materials selection.
- Awareness of agency and compliance requirements such as UL, EMC, hazardous location, or intrinsic safety.
- Comfort with hands-on lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies, and logic analyzers.
- Coursework or project experience in a programming or scripting language such as Python, C, C++, or MATLAB.
- Interest in applying AI/ML techniques to hardware design, simulation, or test problems.
- Previous internship, class project, hackathon, or personal project experience in hardware design.
