Scientist
Bristol Myers Squibb
About the Role
At Bristol Myers Squibb, our purpose-driven culture inspires us to discover, develop, and deliver innovative medicines to prevail over serious diseases. The Kilo Lab Scientist plays a key role in translating laboratory-developed chemical processes into safe, robust, and executable manufacturing processes within the New Brunswick Kilo Lab. This role requires a combination of scientific understanding, practical problem-solving, and mechanical aptitude, with a strong commitment to safety, quality, and environmental compliance.
Key Responsibilities
- Independently lead the implementation and scale-up of chemical processes from the development laboratory into Kilo Lab and pilot-scale manufacturing.
- Serve as the technical and operational lead for process scale up manufacturing campaigns.
- Work hands-on with chemists, engineers, analytical scientists, and other cross-functional partners to translate laboratory processes into safe, robust, and executable manufacturing operations.
- Plan, coordinate, and execute Kilo Lab manufacturing campaigns, including equipment selection and setup, raw material planning, process safety readiness, recipe preparation, batch execution, cleaning, and manufacturing documentation.
- Apply scientific and engineering principles to identify and resolve technical and operational challenges encountered during process scale-up and manufacturing.
- Review process safety information and translate identified process requirements and operating boundaries into appropriate manufacturing practices.
- Monitor and assess process performance during manufacturing and document observations, deviations, learnings, and opportunities for process improvement.
- Ensure manufacturing activities are conducted in accordance with applicable safety, GMP, environmental, and procedural requirements.
- Evaluate and implement new equipment, emerging technologies, and improved processing methodologies.
- Contribute to a collaborative working environment through effective communication, knowledge sharing, and partnership across scientific and engineering disciplines.
Requirements & Tech Stack
- Demonstrated experience in chemical process development, scale-up, pilot-plant operations, or pharmaceutical/chemical manufacturing.
- Working knowledge of chemical processing equipment and synthetic manufacturing unit operations.
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot technical and operational problems using sound scientific judgment.
- Ability and willingness to work hands-on with chemical processing equipment and perform activities associated with setup, operation, and execution of manufacturing processes.
- Understanding of process-safety principles.
- Strong knowledge and understanding of GMP requirements and manufacturing practice and principles.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and coordinate complex activities across functions.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work effectively across scientific and engineering disciplines in a matrix environment.
- Ability to work independently, exercise sound technical judgment, and manage assigned activities with appropriate levels of supervision.
- Commitment to safe working practices, quality, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
- PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related scientific or engineering discipline with 0–2 years of relevant process development scale up experience.
- MS in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related scientific or engineering discipline with 2–4 years of relevant process development scale up experience.
- BS in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related scientific or engineering discipline with 5–7 years of relevant process development scale up experience.
