Technician I, Histology

About the Role

Charles River Laboratories is seeking an experienced Technician I - Histology for their 1st Shift Pathology Services Team in Mattawan, MI. This role involves training to perform and become proficient in onboarding skills, procedures, and cooperating within a team environment. The technician will learn basic skills required to conduct studies, working under close supervision.

Pay Rate: $20 USD/hr

Key Responsibilities

• Performs aspects of tissue processing (debridement, dissection, cutting, cleaning and disinfection, sizing, assessing).
• Performs aspects of packaging and preservation of tissue products (confirmation of sizing, quality, packaging materials, cryopreservation).
• Prepares testing equipment and assists with preventative maintenance.
• Embeds and/or re-embeds processed tissue in paraffin.
• Performs post-processing decontamination of equipment and the processing room according to current procedures and protocols.
• May prepare and organize written data, printouts, and other documents for pathologist review.
• Ensures good welfare and humane care for all animals through gentle, positive human-animal interactions.
• Trains in onboarding skills which may include handling tissues and organs, trimming tissues, embedding, measuring organ weights; microtomy, slide preparation, staining; inventory and quality control, and shipping of tissues.
• Collects, documents, reviews, and verifies data on forms, or in electronic data capture systems.
• Reviews documentation of functions performed as part of quality control requirements.
• Uses and maintains instrumentation and equipment.
• Learns and knows anatomic terms.
• Receives, tracks, and prepares samples or materials as required for the department.
• Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Requirements & Tech Stack

• High school diploma or General Education Degree (G.E.D.) required.
• Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) or equivalent in a biological science, preferred.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities to achieve goals.
• Computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite), commensurate with essential functions, including the ability to learn a validated system.
• Ability to ensure a safe working environment by observing all safety procedures and working methods by making proper use of protective clothing and equipment, and by reading, understanding, and following all safety documents.
• Ability to ensure the integrity of studies and fulfill regulatory agency requirements by performing activities according to Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), Business Operating Procedures (BOP), and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) rules.
• Ability to work extended hours beyond normal work schedule to include evenings, weekends, extended shifts, and/or extra shifts, sometimes on short notice.
• Ability to work under specific time constraints.
• Must be authorized to work in the United States without a sponsor visa, now or in the future.
