ABOUT THE ROLE

OpenGov is seeking Product Engineer Interns eager to learn product ownership, from customer discovery to delivery. This internship focuses on a new role leveraging AI for execution, emphasizing product thinking over development expertise. The ideal intern is curious about customers, their needs, and problem-solving. Exposure to AI-native tooling for coding and interface building is encouraged but not a day-one requirement. This role suits individuals with backgrounds or strong interests in product management, UX design, engineering, or a combination thereof, seeking hands-on ownership.

The 10-week internship runs from June 7, 2027, through August 13, 2027.

WHAT YOU'LL WORK ON

  • A scoped product problem: defined customers, problems, and outcomes for a 10–12 week engagement.
  • Customer discovery: conducting or observing conversations and translating insights into product decisions.
  • User experience flows: defining interaction patterns within an existing design system and validating them with users.
  • AI-assisted delivery: using AI-native tooling to move from intent to spec to prototype, with team support and individual accountability.
  • Metrics: defining and tracking success metrics for your area.

HOW AI WORKS IN THIS ROLE

AI-native tooling assists with tasks historically handled by product managers and designers. Interns will use these tools for:

  • Spec writing: AI drafts initial specs from intent statements; interns review and refine them.
  • UX design: AI generates mockups from the design system; interns make product decisions.
  • Research synthesis: AI clusters interview notes and data; interns interpret findings.
  • Release content: AI generates release notes; interns review and refine them.
  • Test coverage: AI generates test cases; interns write precise acceptance criteria.

AI does not understand customers, make final decisions, own outcomes, or build cross-functional trust. These are the areas interns will learn.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Participate in customer discovery conversations and synthesize insights into product decisions.
  • Define user experience flows and interaction patterns within the existing design system.
  • Write intent documents for AI tooling and review AI-generated specs.
  • Partner with mentors to resolve ambiguity during development.
  • Track adoption and usage metrics to drive iteration.
  • Present product area and findings in a final intern showcase.
  • Proactively surface gaps, risks, and unanswered questions.

QUALIFICATIONS & WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

  • Currently pursuing a degree in computer science, information systems, product design, HCI, business, or a closely adjacent field, or equivalent self-directed experience.
  • Genuine curiosity about customers and product success/failure.
  • Strong written communication skills for clear articulation of product decisions.
  • Comfort with ambiguity and making decisions with incomplete information.
  • Willingness to develop code fluency using AI-native tooling.
  • Prior exposure to product management, UX design, software development, or customer research is a plus.
  • Familiarity with design tools (Figma, etc.) or development tooling is welcome but not required.

COMPENSATION

Boston, MA: $30 per hour

The final compensation will be determined by qualifications, expertise, and geographical location.
