Mechanical Engineer I, R&D
Form Energy
About the Role
Form Energy is hiring a Mechanical Engineer I to join our Core Technology Hardware team. This role will focus on designing hardware to evaluate and refine our iron-air battery technology. You will turn electrode and battery concepts into physical test vehicles, from standard platforms to custom builds for novel experiments. Your work will involve taking designs from CAD through fabrication and assembly, providing working hardware to scientists and engineers to accelerate discovery and development. This role is crucial in building and validating a complex, novel product supporting a more reliable electric grid.
Key Responsibilities
- Design standard and custom test vehicles, balancing performance, manufacturability, and speed to test.
- Fabricate prototypes and proofs of concept, iterating quickly based on build and test feedback.
- Work with technicians to streamline builds and improve the reliability and repeatability of assembly.
- Partner with scientists and engineers to design tools and fixtures that expand discovery and development capabilities.
- Produce CAD models and engineering drawings for fabrication, releasing them through the documentation process.
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously and adjust priorities as needed.
- Follow lab and shop safety practices and design hardware for safe operation.
Requirements & Tech Stack
- Proficiency in 3D CAD and 2D drafting using SolidWorks or a similar tool.
- Familiarity with GD&T fundamentals.
- Hands-on aptitude for prototyping, with experience in fabrication methods such as machining, 3D printing, or sheet metal.
- Ability to write clear technical documentation, including work instructions.
- Communication and collaboration skills, with comfort working alongside scientists, engineers, and technicians.
- Intellectual curiosity, a pragmatic approach to problem-solving, and a willingness to learn quickly.
- Comfort with complexity and a commitment to safety, quality, and the people you work with.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- 0-2 years of experience in mechanical design, through industry roles, internships, co-ops, or research and project work.
