Mechanical Engineering Co-op
mundane
About the Role
- Design and build the physical hardware of teleoperated humanoid robots, including actuators, limbs, end effectors, and supporting structures.
- Own real parts and subsystems that will be integrated into the robot.
- Work closely with engineers on architecture, materials, and manufacturing decisions.
- Experience a fast-paced design cycle from sketch to finished product.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, build, and iterate on robot components and sub-assemblies (arms, hands, torso, actuators, end effectors) with full ownership.
- Support actuator and drivetrain development (e.g., harmonic, cycloidal, planetary reducers, belt and cable drives) through design, assembly, and testing.
- Rapidly prototype using in-house machining, 3D printing, and fabrication.
- Create drawings and prepare parts for manufacturing (CNC, sheet metal, 3D printing).
- Collaborate with vendors and machine shops for quotes and fabrication.
- Perform first-principles calculations (structural, thermal, kinematic) to validate design decisions.
- Build test rigs and fixtures, then iterate and harden hardware based on failures.
- Work with controls and electrical teams on sensor integration, cable routing, thermal management, and URDF/model accuracy.
- Assist with robot assembly, maintenance, and repairs, including field testing and customer demos.
Requirements & Tech Stack
- SolidWorks, Onshape, NX or similar CAD software.
- Design for manufacturing, tolerancing, and GD&T.
- Experience with mill, lathe, 3D printer or similar fabrication tools.
- First-principles calculations (structural, thermal, kinematic).
- Experience with sensor integration, cable routing, thermal management, and URDF/model accuracy.
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Aerospace Engineering, Robotics, or a related field.
- Strong CAD skills, with a portfolio of designed and built parts or assemblies.
- Solid understanding of mechanisms, materials, fasteners, bearings, and power transmission.
- Hands-on fabrication experience using machining or 3D printing tools.
- A bias for action and comfort with fast-paced development.
Bonus:
- Serious personal hardware projects or design team experience (e.g., Formula SAE, rocketry, robotics competitions, custom CNC or vehicle builds).
- Previous co-op or internship at a hardtech company (robotics, aerospace, defense, EV).
- Experience with robotic actuators, legged robots, humanoids, or dexterous hands.
- Exposure to designing for harsh or hazardous environments.
- FEA or thermal simulation experience (ANSYS, Abaqus, or similar).
