2027 Summer Intern, Research and Development
General Motors
About the Role
This role focuses on improving system architecture and optimization mechanisms for connected vehicle systems to maintain service quality, particularly under dynamic cellular networks. The goal is to guarantee user Quality of Experience (QoE) by co-designing cloud and vehicle systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Understand the current status of cellular networks, including deployment and communication performance.
- Design algorithms to address QoE degradation, including latency reduction, service continuity, service smoothness, and minimal QoE sacrifice.
- Design vehicle and cloud/edge end-to-end systems to support the design algorithms and ensure QoE.
- Implement and test an end-to-end system in GM test vehicles.
- Document and potentially improve ideas generated during system work.
- Evaluate system performance using a data-driven approach with good test scenario coverage.
- Practice forward-thinking in system and algorithmic design, foresee research challenges, and proactively identify solutions.
Requirements & Tech Stack
- Master or PhD degree pursuit.
- Must be a current student.
- Able to work fulltime, 40 hours per week during summer months.
- Background in mobile networks and wireless communications, specifically on Cloud/Edge computing and 4G/5G/6G standards.
- Knowledge in end-to-end system design and optimization.
- Knowledge of protocols for heavy data delivery.
- Experience working with data-intensive applications (e.g., video streaming).
- Experience with tools for handling video data (e.g., Gstreamer, ffmpeg).
- Software engineering skills such as C++, C#, Java/Kotlin and/or Python.
- Understanding of multithreading programming and real-time system development.
- Strong in data-driven analytics.
- Highly motivated, independent in thinking, and able to actively communicate with team members.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Work Arrangement
- Hybrid: Expected to report to Warren, MI three times per week, at minimum.
- Internship start dates: May 24th & June 14th, 2027.
Additional Information
- U.S. Person required (U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, asylee or refugee) due to export control restrictions.
