About the Role

Join Toyota Automated Logistics to develop software for autonomous vehicles operating in warehouses. The Product Line Engineering (PLE) team manages product variants, sustaining engineering, and new product development for conveyors, AGVs, and emerging product lines, including test infrastructure. This role focuses on the vehicle side, encompassing motion control, safety systems, and onboard AGV behavior.

This is an entry-level position designed for new graduates, offering mentorship and growth opportunities from well-scoped features and bug fixes to subsystem ownership. A path into perception and vision-guided autonomy is available as the team's AI robotic vision capabilities mature. Reporting to the Product Line Engineering Systems & Testing Team Lead, you will collaborate with controls, mechanical, and project engineering.

Key Responsibilities

Vehicle Control Software Development

  • Develop, test, and maintain onboard AGV software, including motion control, navigation behavior, vehicle state management, error handling, and diagnostics.
  • Implement features, enhancements, and defect fixes for AGV product lines and variants, receiving design review and mentorship.
  • Work with onboard controllers and embedded interfaces such as CAN, serial, and industrial Ethernet.
  • Integrate vehicle software with higher-level PLC and fleet control systems.
  • Participate in code reviews, maintain version control hygiene, and contribute to software documentation.

Safety Systems & Compliance

  • Support the development and maintenance of AGV safety functions, including obstacle detection, protective stop behavior, speed and zone enforcement, and E-stop logic.
  • Implement and verify safety-related software under the guidance of senior engineers, adhering to functional safety and industrial vehicle standards (ANSI/ITSDF B56.5, ISO 3691-4).
  • Maintain traceability between safety requirements, implementation, and verification evidence for product certification.
  • Participate in risk assessments, hazard analyses, and design reviews for vehicle safety behavior.

Testing, Validation & Debug

  • Write and maintain unit, integration, and regression tests for vehicle software.
  • Support automated test development.
  • Validate software on physical AGVs in engineering labs and test cells, running scenarios, capturing data, and verifying behavior.
  • Troubleshoot vehicle issues using logs, bus analyzers, and data capture tools, performing root cause analysis.
  • Support sustaining and field issue resolution for AGV product lines.

Engineering Process & Growth Areas

  • Work within the team's Agile cadence, including JIRA backlog grooming and sprint commitments.
  • Contribute to engineering process and software ownership within PLE, including PLM, design tools, code repositories, and version control practices.
  • Grow into AI robotic vision work, including perception pipelines, object and obstacle detection, sensor fusion, and vision-guided AGV behavior.
  • Assume increased development scope, subsystem ownership, and technical decision-making as skills and product knowledge develop.

Travel: 5% overnight travel (expenses paid).

Requirements & Tech Stack

  • Proficiency in at least one of C, C++, C#, or Python.
  • Solid fundamentals in data structures, algorithms, and debugging.
  • Working knowledge of version control (Git) and collaborative development practices like branching and code review.
  • Willingness to work hands-on with physical hardware in lab and production environments.
  • Strong documentation, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Must be eligible to work in the USA long-term without sponsorship.

Qualifications

  • BS in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Development, or a related technical discipline.
  • 0–2 years of professional experience; new and recent graduates are encouraged to apply.
