Software Development Engineer II

About the Role

As a Software Development Engineer 2 (SDE2) at Tesco, you are in a mid-level individual contributor role. This position serves as a stepping stone towards an SDE3 role, focusing on career development and demonstrating potential for advancement. Your impact extends across your team, where you provide technical leadership for medium to large features. You will begin to produce your own work by understanding team challenges, support other engineers, and prioritize sharing your skills and knowledge. A key focus is on the quality of work, helping your team set and maintain high standards, and applying best practices within Tesco and across the industry.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership of medium to large features, participating in their design and taking accountability for their delivery.
• Implement and ship end-to-end stories.
• Understand deeper problems within your domain and be considered an expert in a specific area.
• Build and prioritize your own work by understanding team problems and proposing, implementing, and delivering solutions.
• Be aware of short-term and long-term goals across your product.
• Utilize data-driven decision-making techniques to encourage optimal outcomes, accepting appropriate trade-offs.
• Support other engineers in their delivery and take the lead on major components or small services.
• Display ownership for the team's work and know when to seek support.
• Identify and raise risks appropriately.
• Support, coach, and mentor those around you, including assisting junior engineers with onboarding.
• Share skills and technical knowledge across your team.
• Contribute to raising the quality bar of your team's codebase through your own code and peer reviews.
• Provide constructive and useful feedback to other team members on their code.
• Understand and apply industry best practices and Tesco architectural standards.
• Be aware of industry best testing and deployment strategies and influence their implementation within your team.
• Communicate technical concepts to key stakeholders.
