Mechanical Design Engineer
SMARTFOX
About the Role
This role involves taking products from concept design through to production, encompassing detailed design, prototyping, validation testing, and release to manufacturing. The position requires collaboration with cross-functional teams and suppliers to ensure quality and timely delivery of hardware.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop products from concept to production: concept design, detailed design, prototyping, validation testing, and manufacturing release.
- Create 3D models, assemblies, and dimensioned drawings using SolidWorks, Creo, NX, Inventor, or CATIA, applying GD&T per ASME Y14.5.
- Conduct FEA, CFD, and thermal studies using tools like ANSYS, Abaqus, SolidWorks Simulation, COMSOL, or similar, to optimize designs.
- Select and size components such as materials, fasteners, bearings, gears, seals, actuators, and motors, considering performance, cost, weight, and manufacturability.
- Apply DFM/DFA principles for various manufacturing processes including CNC machining, sheet metal, castings, welded fabrications, injection molding, and additive manufacturing.
- Build and test prototypes, perform tolerance stack-ups, and lead design reviews, DFMEAs, and root-cause investigations.
- Work with domestic and overseas suppliers, machine shops, and contract manufacturers, supporting first article inspections and production ramps.
- Manage BOMs, ECRs/ECOs, and revisions within PLM and ERP systems (e.g., Windchill, Teamcenter, Arena, Oracle, SAP).
- Design to applicable standards and regulations (e.g., ASME, UL, ANSI, ISO, FDA design controls, ITAR/EAR), and prepare documentation for certification and audits.
- Support installation, commissioning, and field troubleshooting, including site visits.
- Utilize Python, MATLAB, or Excel for calculations and design trade studies.
- Employ AI-assisted tools and generative design cautiously for concept exploration.
- Collaborate daily with electrical, firmware, controls, quality, supply chain, and manufacturing teams.
- Write design specifications, test plans, validation reports, and work instructions.
Requirements & Tech Stack
- Solid grounding in statics, dynamics, mechanics of materials, thermodynamics, heat transfer, machine design, and engineering drawings.
- Hands-on 3D CAD experience from academic projects or work.
- Practical, curious mindset and willingness to engage in hands-on work.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field from an ABET-accredited program, or equivalent experience.
- Authorization to work in the United States.
Qualifications
- FE exam passed or EIT status, and PE license or progress toward it.
- Certifications such as CSWP/CSWE, ASME GDTP, Six Sigma Green Belt, or Certified Quality Engineer.
- Experience with FEA/CFD, vibration and fatigue analysis, or tolerance analysis tools.
- Experience with sheet metal, machined parts, weldments, castings, plastics, or elastomers.
- Familiarity with PLM/ERP systems, change control, and design for regulated industries (e.g., ISO 9001, AS9100, ISO 13485, FDA 21 CFR 820).
- Experience with 3D printing, rapid prototyping, test fixtures, DAQ, and instrumentation.
- Skills in Python, MATLAB, or LabVIEW.
- A personal project, robotics build, or portfolio.
- Industry background in aerospace and defense, automotive and EV, medical devices, semiconductor equipment, robotics, heavy equipment, energy and oil and gas, HVAC, consumer products, or packaging.
- Spanish fluency.
- US citizenship or ability to meet ITAR requirements, and security clearance or willingness to obtain one.
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel.
