About the Role

We are hiring a generalist Mechanical Hardware Engineer as an early member of our hardware team. You will own the physical layer that our entire robotic platform runs on—from initial CAD modeling to physical prototyping, actuator integration, FEA, and rapid deployment. This is a role for true makers—engineers who build impressive physical systems on their own time, move comfortably between short-horizon prototyping, and thrive in dynamic, high-ownership environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • 0-to-1 Prototyping: Design, fabricate, and assemble teleoperation rigs, custom leader arms, and test platforms on short turnaround cycles (days to weeks).
  • End-Effector & Actuator Integration: Own actuator layout, load-bearing FEA, and structural integration for specialized end-effectors, grippers, and robotic arms.
  • Rapid Fabrication: Work with modern manufacturing methods (3D printing, CNC machining, sheet metal) to quickly iterate on functional prototypes.
  • Cross-Functional Ownership: Collaborate closely with ML, electrical, and field deployment teams to translate real-world task requirements into reliable physical hardware.

Requirements & Tech Stack

  • CAD & Prototyping Proficiency: Expert-level capability in SolidWorks, Onshape, or Fusion 360 paired with hands-on shop, machining, or 3D printing experience.
  • Solid Engineering Fundamentals: Strong foundation in FEA, GD&T, actuator selection, and physical prototyping.
  • On-Site Energy: Willingness to work in our SF office 6 days/week alongside an elite, fast-moving engineering team.

Qualifications

  • 0–4 Years of Hardware Experience: A strong track record in mechanical engineering for robotics, actuators, consumer electronics, aerospace, or automotive systems.
  • Visible Maker Portfolio: A demonstrable portfolio or history of personal projects, build clubs (FSAE, FIRST Robotics, BattleBots), or independent hardware builds.
  • Education: Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience (degree waived for applicants with exceptional hands-on portfolios or machine shop experience).

Ideal Backgrounds (Not Required, But Great Signals)

  • Experience at high-velocity hardware companies or startups (e.g., Tesla, Apple, ASML, Zipline, Anduril, Figure, 1X).
  • Deep hands-on background as a machinist, technician, or racing/motorsports build lead.
