About the Role

IBM Infrastructure designs and builds enterprise hardware. As an IBM Infrastructure new hire, you will work alongside experienced hardware engineers on real systems undergoing real compliance testing, helping ensure IBM products meet electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and regulatory standards for global markets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Hands-On Hardware Lab Work: Set up, operate, and support hardware test configurations in the EMC compliance lab, handling physical systems, cables, instrumentation, and test fixtures under engineer supervision.
  • EMC/EMI Compliance Testing Support: Assist in executing emissions and immunity test procedures in accordance with applicable regulatory standards (e.g., FCC Part 15, CISPR 32, IEC 61000 series), following all steps precisely.
  • Regulatory Document Interpretation: Read, review, and apply requirements from international EMC and safety regulatory standards; flag ambiguities or procedural gaps to senior engineers.
  • IT Administration Support: Assist with configuration and administration of test systems, lab computers, and instrumentation software for executing and recording compliance test results.
  • Technical Documentation: Author and maintain accurate test records, test reports, compliance checklists, and lab notebooks.
  • Collaborative Engineering Participation: Work collaboratively with cross-functional hardware, mechanical, and systems assurance teams; actively develop and apply new skills under the guidance of senior engineers.

Requirements & Tech Stack

  • Hands-On Hardware Experience: Demonstrated ability to work directly with physical electronic hardware, including wiring, benchtop instrumentation (oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, signal generators), and hardware assembly or configuration.
  • Electrical Engineering Fundamentals: Working knowledge of circuit analysis, electromagnetic theory, and electronic systems.
  • IT Administration Skills: Ability to configure and administer computer systems, manage files and software tools, and support instrumentation interfaces.
  • Regulatory Document Proficiency: Demonstrated ability to read, comprehend, and follow detailed technical and regulatory documents, standards, or procedural specifications with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Procedural Discipline: Proven ability and personal commitment to strictly following established procedures, test protocols, and safety guidelines.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Familiarity with EMC/EMI concepts and international compliance standards such as FCC Part 15, CISPR 32, IEC 61000, or CE marking requirements is preferred.
  • Exposure to Python scripting or other programming languages for test automation or data analysis in an engineering context is preferred.
  • Experience with signal integrity or power integrity analysis tools or concepts is preferred.
  • Prior lab experience gained through academic coursework, co-op programs, research positions, or personal projects involving hardware build, test, or debug activities is preferred.
