Research Scientist Engineer Assistant

About This Opportunity

The School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences (SAFS) at the University of Washington is seeking a Research Scientist Engineer Assistant to support research on groundfish feeding habits in Alaska. This is a 1.0 FTE permanent position.

Reporting to the Professor, the Research Scientist Engineer Assistant will support the collection, processing, and analysis of biological samples related to groundfish feeding habits in Alaska.

Key Responsibilities

• Taxonomically identify stomach contents of marine fish and enter data via an online computer form. (55%)
• Participate in research cruises. (10%)
• Maintain records and quality control of food habits collections and laboratory analysis. (10%)
• Assist in report preparation of research results. (5%)
• Maintain and update prey specimen collection. (5%)
• Develop new keys and identification methods. (5%)
• Investigate new technologies for food habits research. (5%)
• Assist project leader with collection of literature relevant to fish physiology and collection of field samples. (5%)

Requirements & Tech Stack

• Bachelor's degree in Marine Biology, Fisheries, Zoology, Ecology, Biology, or related field.
• Less than one year of relevant research experience.
• Equivalent combination of education/experience may substitute for minimum qualifications.
• Experience with taxonomic identification of aquatic taxa.
• Knowledge of data management practices.
• Knowledge of taxonomic identification of N. Pacific taxa.
• Ability to follow lab safety guidelines.
• Preferred: Experience with Microsoft Suite, Excel/Spreadsheets.
• Preferred: Less than 1 year experience in taxonomically identification of stomach contents of marine fish or related relevant experience.

• Pay Range Minimum: $52,692.00 annual
• Pay Range Maximum: $57,000.00 annual
