How to adapt a cover letter template

A template is a skeleton, not a finished letter. Recruiters read hundreds of letters and spot a generic one in a sentence. Change three things every time: the job title and company name, the two or three skills the posting asks for, and the one sentence about why you want this job at this company. Keep what works: a short opening that names the job, a middle paragraph with one real example and a result, and a polite close with how to reach you.

Which template should I use?

No work history in the field: use the “no experience” template and lead with projects, coursework and volunteering. Still a student: use the internship template and put your graduation date and availability in it. Someone referred you: use the referral template and put their name in the first sentence. A referral gets your letter read. No opening posted: use the cold template and ask for one small thing, like an opening or 15 minutes of advice. Moving fields: use the career change template and show how your past work transfers.

Frequently asked questions

Are these cover letter templates free to use?

Yes. Copy any of them, with no sign-up. Just replace the bracketed parts with your own details before you send.

What should an entry-level cover letter include?

The job you are applying for, two or three skills that match the posting with one real example, one specific reason you want this company, and how to reach you. Keep it under one page.

Can I write a cover letter with no experience?

Yes. Use projects, classes, volunteering, clubs and part-time jobs as your examples, and show the skills they built. The no-experience template above is built for this.

Should I send a cover letter by email or upload it?

Follow the application. If you apply on a form, upload a PDF. If you email a recruiter, paste a shorter version in the body of the email and attach your resume.

Is it okay to use the same template for every job?

Use the same structure, but rewrite the details each time. A letter that names the role, the company and one specific reason will always beat a copy-paste.
