Vacuum Process Intern
Seagate Technology
About Our Group
This position will work with the Vacuum Deposition and Etch Process Engineering team at Seagate’s Normandale campus in Bloomington, Minnesota. The intern will support engineers who investigate, control, and optimize the capability of advanced vacuum process tools used in recording-head manufacturing. This work enables stable, high-yield manufacturing processes and supports the introduction, qualification, and continuous improvement of new technologies in the factory.
The Vacuum Process Engineering group is responsible for supporting and improving vacuum-based manufacturing processes such as physical vapor deposition, ion milling, reactive ion etch, annealing, and other related thin-film or material-removal processes. The group partners closely with equipment engineering, factory controls, metrology, yield engineering, integration, product development, and manufacturing operations.
About The Role
- The main project will focus on optimizing etch rates for multiple materials on our ion mill tool by evaluating angle, beam size, and residual roughness.
- Assist engineers with developing, implementing, and optimizing vacuum processes—including deposition, ion milling, reactive ion etch, and annealing—used in recording-head manufacturing.
- Learn how statistical process control (SPC) tools and out-of-control action plans (OCAPs) assist in controlling processes and creating documents related to new etch rate recipes.
