Backend Developer

About the Role

The Backend Developer will join a cross-functional product team to build and maintain server-side components that power web and mobile applications. Working under the guidance of senior engineers, the role focuses on implementing RESTful services, handling data persistence, and ensuring reliable performance of core APIs. The developer will translate feature specifications into clean, testable code, troubleshoot issues that arise in staging or production, and contribute to documentation and code reviews. Interaction with product managers, QA testers, and front-end developers is expected to deliver functional endpoints that meet business requirements.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain RESTful services using Java and Spring Boot.
• Write unit and integration tests to ensure code quality.
• Participate in daily stand-ups and sprint planning to understand feature requirements.
• Debug and resolve production incidents under guidance of senior engineers.
• Implement data access layer using JDBC or JPA for relational databases.
• Contribute to code reviews, providing and receiving feedback.
• Update API documentation and maintain Swagger specifications.
• Monitor application performance using logs and basic metrics.
• Assist in migration of legacy scripts to modern code base.
• Follow team coding standards and security best practices.

Requirements & Tech Stack

• Java programming language
• Spring Boot framework
• REST API design and consumption
• SQL and basic database design (e.g., PostgreSQL or MySQL)
• Git version control
• Writing unit tests with JUnit or similar
• Basic Linux command line usage

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field.
• 0 to 1 years of professional experience developing server-side applications.
• Familiarity with object-oriented programming concepts.
• Understanding of relational databases and ability to write SQL queries.
• Ability to work in an Agile team and communicate technical issues clearly.

Preferred Qualifications

• Internship or co-op experience in a backend development team.
• Exposure to containerization tools such as Docker.
• Coursework or project work involving cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP).
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines (e.g., Jenkins, GitHub Actions).

Preferred Skills

• Knowledge of NoSQL databases (e.g., MongoDB).
• Experience with message brokers like RabbitMQ or Kafka.
• Understanding of performance profiling tools (e.g., JProfiler).
• Ability to write simple scripts in Bash or Python for automation.
