Mechanical Engineer Intern, Autonomy (Summer 2027)
Joby Aviation
About the Role
This role exists within the System Electronics Mechanical team. This team is responsible for designing pilot inceptors, air data probes, and numerous computer assemblies across the S4, as well as mechanically designing next-generation perception suites for enabling autonomy for future aircraft. We’re seeking a passionate, hands-on, and fundamentally strong engineer to own designs across both the concept and certification phase, work cross-functionally to optimize vehicle-level solutions, and ensure the safe, lightweight, and reliable delivery of electromechanical assemblies to aircraft.
Key Responsibilities
- Own designs across both the concept and certification phase, including:
- Rapid prototyping and development testing
- Mass optimization, stress analysis, and thermal analysis
- Troubleshooting issues in manufacturing, testing, and in the field
- Driving system safety, reliability, requirements, and integration considerations
- Designing for manufacturability and cost at the component and assembly levels
- Communicate design risks, complex concepts, and data clearly and honestly
- Collaborate effectively and with humility across multiple areas of expertise
Requirements & Tech Stack
- Pursuing B.S./M.S. in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering (or equivalent)
- Heading into junior or senior year of undergraduate degree or above at time of internship
- Available Summer 2027
- Proficiency with CAD (e.g., CATIA, NX, SolidWorks) for complex surfacing, part design, and assemblies
- Strong fundamentals in statics, dynamics, heat transfer, and materials science
Qualifications (Desired)
- Familiarity with both low-voltage and high-voltage electromechanical designs
- Experience with finite element analysis (e.g., Abaqus, Ansys, SolidWorks)
