About the Role

Waymo is seeking PhD interns to contribute to the Waymo AI Foundations team. This team focuses on developing machine learning solutions for autonomous driving, aiming to enable safe operation in diverse conditions and cities. Interns will partner with industry leaders on impactful projects, applying their knowledge and expanding their skill sets. This is a hybrid onsite internship.

Key Responsibilities

• Define research goals, set up datasets and training code to optimize model performance.
• Analyze results and define subsequent experiments.
• Write documentation for effective team communication.
• Incorporate feedback from team members to adjust setups, experiments, and research directions.

Requirements & Tech Stack

• Currently pursuing a PhD in Computer Science, Robotics, Machine Learning, or a related quantitative field.
• Knowledge of pre-training and post-training of large foundation models.
• Hands-on experience training modern AI models.
• Good analytical skills; ability to interpret experiment results and form verifiable hypotheses.
• Ability to write bug-free code and implement correct software with minimal guidance.
• Familiarity with modern AI infrastructure and tooling such as pytorch, jax.
• Comfortable working in cluster/server environments.

Qualifications We Prefer

• Solid research background in robotics or self-driving cars.
• Strong research skills and a publication record in top conferences.
