Environment Concept Artist intern
Project M
About Project M
Project M is an early-stage first-person science-fiction MMO-RPG looter-shooter project. We are developing its world, story, and visual identity, including landscapes, human settlements, alien architecture, and environments shaped by conflict. We are looking for an Environment Concept Artist Intern to explore how these places could look and feel.
About the Internship
This is a focused concept-art internship for a student or developing artist who wants to practice environment design through research, experimentation, and revision. Your initial project will explore one location: gathering references, developing several rough visual directions, and refining a selected direction through feedback. The focus is on learning and visual exploration, with manageable assignments.
What you will work on
- Research references for landscapes, architecture, materials, lighting, and atmosphere.
- Create mood boards, thumbnail sketches, and composition studies.
- Explore different interpretations of a location through rough sketches and color studies.
- Develop selected ideas into clearer environment concepts.
- Show how buildings, terrain, and other environmental elements communicate the location’s history and inhabitants.
- Add supporting sketches and annotations explaining shapes, scale, and materials.
- Present your ideas, discuss feedback, and revise your work.
- Organize your references, working files, and design notes.
Learning Objectives
During the internship, you will practice translating a creative brief into environment concepts, exploring alternatives, developing a consistent visual language, and communicating design decisions. A learning plan and review schedule will be agreed upon before the internship begins. Creative direction and feedback will be provided by the founder.
What we are looking for
- A portfolio containing environment artwork, landscape studies, or architectural concepts. Coursework and personal projects are welcome.
- Basic understanding of perspective, composition, color, lighting, and scale.
- Familiarity with a digital art tool such as Photoshop, Krita, Procreate, or an equivalent.
- Interest in science-fiction worlds, imaginative architecture, and environmental storytelling.
- Willingness to explore alternatives and improve work through feedback.
- Clear communication in English and the ability to organize your work remotely.
- Basic Blender or other 3D sketching skills are helpful but optional.
Practical Details
- Duration: three months.
- Commitment: 32 hours per week.
- Location: remote.
- Compensation: unpaid.
- Start date and working schedule: agreed before starting.
