About the Role
The Operator supervises autonomous heavy construction equipment from a console at the company's Southridge civil production site. Operators manage equipment from the console; they do not drive machines during normal autonomous production. Prior experience is not required, as the company trains and authorizes operators before go-live.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain continuous console coverage during active autonomous production, including break and turnover coverage.
- Continuously monitor assigned Autonomous and Semi-Autonomous Machines (ASAMs) within the Autonomous Operating Zone (AOZ): vehicle state, position, speed, off-path events, Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) diagnostics, and notifications.
- Before starting autonomous operation, confirm site and vehicle readiness per site procedure and communicate intent to all affected personnel.
- Operate and manage task assignments and user-assigned functions for designated vehicles; replan routes and assignments as needed to maintain safety and efficiency.
- Apply the stop hierarchy correctly: pause, clear an assignment stop (A-stop), emergency stop (E-stop), and site All Stop.
- Identify, investigate, and resolve exceptions within authority, including off-path events, obstacle detection stops, OEM faults, network and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) positioning loss, proximity events, and deadlocks. Escalate per the company's Site Escalation Plan.
- Review, action, and dismiss notifications; file issue reports with the vehicle, location, and event details.
- Maintain radio communication with In-Cab Clients (ICCs), safety riders, field crews, and shift leadership.
- Coordinate vehicle recoveries and other hands-on interventions with onsite field personnel.
- Support shift startup, turnover, and shutdown; complete passdown and incident logs accurately.
- Follow AOZ, communications, stop-work, All Stop, and recovery procedures without exception.
Requirements
Experience Threshold (Choose one path):
- Path A: 18 or more months supervising autonomous or remotely operated equipment from a console.
- Path B: 3 or more years personally operating heavy civil equipment, with regular use of digital displays or guidance tools.
- Path C: 3 or more years in construction field technology or site support around active heavy equipment.
Additional Requirements:
- 6 or more months acting as a shift senior, crew lead, trainer, or designated escalation point for others.
- Safety judgment under pressure: Holds a stop decision and escalates correctly when pressured to resume.
