About Our Team
The Interns for Security, Arms Control, and Force Protection Engineering (iSAFE) institute provides students the opportunity to develop next-generation systems for compelling national security missions. This can include work on complex and challenging problems to lower the risk posed by high-consequence events, such as nuclear and biological proliferation, terrorist threats, catastrophic incidents, and potentially destabilizing events. Projects range from small R&D efforts to large, multidisciplinary team collaborations on complex systems. The mission of iSAFE is to contribute to national security through the effective use of science, technology, and full-spectrum system solutions to lower the risk posed by high-consequence events. iSAFE's objectives include establishment of a pipeline of highly skilled and competent interns for possible future employment at Sandia, obtaining valuable assistance with the organization's projects and tasks, developing leadership and networking opportunities, and fulfilling a corporate commitment to social responsibility.
About Sandia
Sandia National Laboratories is the nation’s premier science and engineering lab for national security and technology innovation, with teams of specialists focused on cutting-edge work in a broad array of areas.
Security Clearance
This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance. Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review. Employees in New Mexico need to pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Under federal law, citizens and agents of the People's Republic of China, the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Democratic People's Republic of North Korea, and the Russian Federation are generally prohibited from accessing Sandia National Laboratories, unless they are also a U.S. citizen. If hired without a clearance and it subsequently becomes necessary to obtain and maintain one, or if bidding on positions that require a clearance, a pre-processing background review may be conducted. Applicants for a DOE security clearance need to be U.S. citizens. Holding more than one citizenship may impact the ability to obtain a security clearance. For those requiring uncleared access for greater than 179 days, a UPIV process is required.
