Electrical Engineer
SMARTFOX
About the Role
SMARTFOX is seeking an Electrical Engineer. This role offers different tracks based on experience level: Electrical Engineer I (0-2 years), Electrical Engineer II (2-5 years), and Senior Electrical Engineer (5+ years).
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop circuits, PCBs, and electrical systems from concept through production.
- Develop analog, digital, mixed-signal, and power electronics (power supplies, motor drives, battery systems, sensors).
- Select components, manage the BOM, and balance performance, cost, and supply chain availability.
- Simulate and validate designs using SPICE, LTspice, MATLAB/Simulink, or similar tools.
- Bring up prototypes in the lab using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, spectrum analyzers, and power analyzers; debug and iterate.
- Work with firmware and software engineers on embedded systems (microcontrollers, FPGAs, communication protocols).
- Design for EMC/EMI, safety, and reliability, and support compliance testing (UL, FCC, CE, IEC).
- Create schematics, layout reviews, test plans, and manufacturing documentation.
- Support production, contract manufacturers, and field issues with root cause analysis (FMEA, 8D).
- Design or support control systems, PLC panels, power distribution, and industrial automation, depending on the program.
- Partner with mechanical, software, quality, and product teams on integrated systems.
Experience Tracks
- Electrical Engineer I (0-2 years): Circuit and schematic design, board bring-up, test support, learning products with a mentor.
- Electrical Engineer II (2-5 years): Owning subsystems end to end, leading validation and compliance testing, working with suppliers and manufacturers, mentoring.
- Senior Electrical Engineer (5+ years): Architecting products and systems, setting design standards, leading cross-functional projects, driving cost and reliability improvements.
Requirements & Tech Stack
- Strong foundation in circuit analysis, analog and digital electronics, and electromagnetics.
- Hands-on lab skills: using test equipment, soldering, and debugging real hardware.
- Experience with a schematic and PCB design tool (Altium, KiCad, OrCAD, or similar).
- Clear documentation and communication.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field (ABET-accredited preferred).
Nice to have (not required)
- EIT/FE certificate or PE license.
- Experience with microcontrollers (ARM Cortex, STM32, ESP32, TI) or FPGAs (Xilinx, Intel).
- Knowledge of power electronics, motor control, RF/wireless (Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, LoRa), or high-speed design.
- Scripting in Python, MATLAB, or C for test automation and analysis.
- Familiarity with EMC testing, safety standards (UL, IEC 60601, IPC), and DFM/DFT practices.
- Experience with PLCs, SCADA, NEC, or industrial controls.
- Industry experience in consumer electronics, automotive/EV, aerospace, medical devices, energy/utilities, industrial automation, semiconductor, etc.
- A portfolio showcasing personal PCBs, Arduino or Raspberry Pi builds, robotics or Formula SAE teams, ham radio, or hardware side projects.
