Overview

Protecting policyholders’ dreams, passions, and livelihoods has a direct impact on the communities we serve. We work towards excellence, conduct ourselves with high integrity, and take our work seriously, but not ourselves. Society Insurance is seeking an Underwriting Process & Technology Intern for the summer of 2027. This position supports underwriting operational and continuous improvement initiatives by assisting with business process analysis, requirements gathering and documentation, system testing activities, operational data analysis, and cross-functional projects – while gaining exposure to underwriting processes, technology solutions, and business operations to enhance underwriting effectiveness and efficiency.

About the Role

  • Builds and maintains underwriting rule, workflow, question, and reference data inventories.
  • Converts approved requirements into structured test scenarios and executes supervised testing.
  • Validates expected results, documents defects clearly, and supports retesting.
  • Analyzes sanitized operational data to identify patterns, exceptions, or process friction.
  • Creates and improves process maps, decision records, job aids, and technical documentation.
  • Reviews configuration and documentation for completeness, consistency, and traceability.
  • Supports low-risk reference data or configuration changes under direct review.
  • Presents findings, recommendations, and completed deliverables.
  • Independently owns task-level decisions within an assigned and clearly defined scope.
  • Makes recommendations within an assigned scope and supports them with relevant evidence and documented assumptions.
  • Escalates uncertainty, production risk, and scope changes before proceeding.
  • Does not independently approve production changes or alter underwriting intent.
  • Shadows business users across various lines of business to understand underwriting processes and technologies used to support them.
  • Collaborates with cross-functional teams to gather insights and contribute to project deliverables.

About You

  • Accountable and accepts ownership.
  • Analytical thinker and makes sound business decisions.
  • Enjoys gathering and evaluating all relevant information to make logical conclusions.
  • Quality focused and manages the efficiency and accuracy of the work produced.
  • Curious and seeks to understand.
  • Self-starter who is motivated, driven, and goal-focused.
  • Can manage multiple responsibilities and stay on top of time-sensitive tasks.

What it Will Take

  • Pursuing a bachelor’s degree.
  • Experience organizing information, analyzing data, or documenting processes through coursework, employment, or projects.
  • Willingness to learn technical skills such as SQL, process mapping, testing, and system configuration.
  • Prior office experience highly desirable.
  • Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Risk Management, Insurance, Business, Information Systems, Computer Science, Data Analytics, Management Information Systems, Engineering, or related field highly desirable.
  • Interest in commercial underwriting, business processes, data, technology, and problem solving, with a curiosity for how business needs are translated into operational and technology solutions highly desirable.
