About Torus

Torus is headquartered in Utah and is expanding manufacturing at our 545,000-square-foot facility in Salt Lake City called GigaOne. We design, engineer, manufacture, install, and support our systems end-to-end. Torus systems help reduce costs, lower emissions, and protect facilities from outages, while strengthening the security and reliability of the broader utility grid. Torus is committed to American manufacturing, engineering excellence, and building energy systems that last.

About The Role

As a Mechanical Engineering Intern, you'll contribute to the design, validation, and building of sub-systems that make resilient, scalable energy storage possible. This internship sits at the intersection of hands-on engineering and systems thinking. You'll learn how mechanical engineering decisions ripple across the full product lifecycle—from early concept through manufacturing—and how to balance cost, reliability, manufacturability, and quality. You'll develop the thinking that separates good engineers from great ones. You'll thrive here if you like hard problems, want to take real ownership of projects, and care about accelerating the energy transition. We value speed and quality equally. You'll work alongside experienced mechanical and electrical engineers who'll mentor you.

Who You Are

  • Inspired by Torus’ mission to build resilient, sustainable, and intelligent power.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow precise instructions and specifications.
  • Must possess strong problem-solving skills.
  • Safety conscious: Demonstrated commitment to maintaining a safe working environment. Familiarity with safety regulations and practices.
  • Communication Skills: Ability to collaborate effectively with team members, engineers, and supervisors.
  • Time Management: Strong organizational and time management skills. Ability to prioritize tasks effectively to meet deadlines without compromising quality.
  • Flexibility: Willingness to adapt to changing priorities and work on multiple projects simultaneously. Ability to work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Internship Responsibilities

  • Build engineering experience by contributing to the assembly and design of products like Torus Pulse (battery energy storage) and/or Torus Spin (flywheel energy storage) products.
  • Learn how energy systems work by partnering with cross-functional teams—electrical, mechanical, manufacturing, and controls.
  • Develop initial design projects or assembly fixture designs that accelerate manufacturing and directly improve how our systems perform in the field.

Requirements & Tech Stack

  • Continuing Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
  • Completed Freshman year (2 semesters).
  • Strong academic performance, typically reflected by a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

  • CAD Experience working with mechanical assemblies and drawings in SOLIDWORKS.
  • Machine shop and or welding experience is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Google Office Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, or similar software.
  • Previous internship or work experience in a related field is a plus, but not required.
  • Eagerness to learn and take on new challenges.
  • Ability to commit to the full duration of the internship program.
