INDUSTRIAL DESIGN INTERN

About the Role

At ASTR DEFENCE, we are developing next-generation products by bringing together engineering, technology, and innovation. We are seeking passionate and creative Industrial Design / Product Design Interns who want to work on challenging, real-world engineered products. This internship offers the opportunity to transform ideas into physical products where aesthetics meet engineering, ergonomics meets functionality, and creativity meets technology.

Key Responsibilities

You will collaborate with multidisciplinary R&D and engineering teams on innovative defence technology products, contributing to:

• Industrial Design & Product Aesthetics
• Concept development, ideation, sketching, and product styling.
• Exploring distinctive product forms, proportions, contours, and design language.
• Designing aesthetically refined enclosures, housings, and physical interfaces.
• Material selection, surface finishes, colours, and textures.
• Ergonomics & Human-Centred Design
• Product ergonomics, usability, and human-factor considerations.
• Design of grips, handles, controls, and user interfaces.
• Improving physical interaction, comfort, and product usability.
• 3D Modelling & Visualisation
• Developing detailed 3D models using SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Rhino or equivalent tools.
• Creating realistic product renders and design presentations.
• Exploring multiple design concepts and iterations.
• Prototyping & Product Realisation
• Developing physical mock-ups and 3D-printed prototypes.
• Collaborating with mechanical and electronics engineers.
• Understanding materials, manufacturing processes, and design for manufacturing.
• Taking concepts from sketches to functional, manufacturable designs.

Internship Details

• Location: Astr Defence Pvt. Ltd., Hubli, Karnataka
• Duration: 6 Months
• Mode: Full-time | On-site
• Stipend: As per company policy

Requirements & Tech Stack

• Must-Have Skills:
• Strong creative thinking and visualisation abilities.
• Excellent hand sketching and concept development skills.
• Good understanding of form, aesthetics, proportions, and ergonomics.
• Working knowledge of SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Rhino or similar 3D CAD tools.
• Basic understanding of materials and manufacturing processes.
• Added Advantage:
• KeyShot, Blender or other product rendering tools.
• 3D printing and physical prototyping experience.
• Previous projects involving automotive, consumer electronics, industrial equipment, or engineered products.

Qualifications

• B.Des – Industrial Design
• B.Des – Product Design
• Related Industrial / Physical Product Design disciplines.
• Eligibility: B.Des students / recent graduates in relevant disciplines.

Portfolio Requirements

We are particularly interested in seeing:

• Original product design concepts.
• Hand sketches and ideation explorations.
• 3D CAD models and product renders.
• Physical prototypes and projects you've built.
• Your thought process – how you approached a design problem and developed a solution.
