About the Role

The Sustainability & Low Carbon Transition Advisory team is part of the Global Advisory team within the Investment Banking & Finance Area at BBVA CIB. The team advises clients on how the energy transition impacts strategy, valuation, risk, and access to capital. This is translated into actionable investment banking solutions, including cleantech bankability, capital structuring, equity partnerships, commercial structuring advisory, project- and asset-based finance, and sustainable finance structuring.

The Summer Intern will work alongside experienced team members and senior bankers, supporting client dialogue, pitches, analytical work, and selected aspects of live advisory mandates. The internship is designed to provide hands-on exposure to sustainability and low carbon transition advisory, corporate finance analysis, transaction structuring, and the development of client-ready materials in a global investment banking environment.

The intern will gain practical experience evaluating companies, projects, technologies, and financing alternatives across energy, cleantech, infrastructure, and other sectors affected by the low carbon transition. The role will also provide opportunities to interact with professionals across CIB Coverage, Investment Banking, Global Markets, Sustainable Finance, and other internal teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in a structured learning experience designed to develop a foundational understanding of sustainability and low carbon transition advisory within investment banking.
  • Work alongside experienced team members to gain exposure to client strategy, transaction analysis, corporate finance, financing alternatives, and the commercial and financial considerations that affect the bankability of low carbon projects and businesses.
  • Assist with selected components of live advisory assignments under the guidance and supervision of senior team members, including research, analysis, preparation of materials, and coordination of workstreams and deliverables.
  • Develop practical financial analysis and modeling skills through exposure to financial statements, cash flows, key credit metrics, valuation concepts, capital structures, and project- or asset-based financing considerations.
  • Support the preparation of high-quality client-ready presentations, pitch books, proposals, management presentations, and other marketing or transaction materials, translating complex analysis into clear and concise messages, charts, and visuals.
  • Conduct company, sector, technology, market, and regulatory research related to sustainability, energy transition, cleantech, infrastructure, and sustainable finance trends.
  • Gain exposure to transaction execution processes, which may include debt and equity financing, M&A or joint venture processes, investor materials, due diligence, information requests, and coordination with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Support the maintenance and improvement of analytical tools, financial models, market databases, templates, and other team resources.
  • Participate in internal discussions and, when practical, client meetings to understand how strategic, financial, commercial, and sustainability considerations are incorporated into advisory recommendations.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across BBVA, including CIB Coverage and product teams, to develop a broader understanding of the bank's investment banking, financing, markets, and sustainable finance capabilities.
  • Receive ongoing coaching and feedback from senior team members and develop the analytical, communication, teamwork, and professional skills required for a potential career in investment banking and low carbon transition advisory.

Requirements & Tech Stack

  • Candidates should be currently pursuing a bachelor's degree, preferably in Business, Economics, Accounting, Finance, Mathematics, Engineering, or a related quantitative discipline, with an expected graduation date following completion of the internship.
  • Strong academic performance and demonstrated interest in investment banking, corporate finance, energy transition, sustainability, infrastructure, cleantech, or financial markets.
  • Relevant coursework in accounting, corporate finance, financial statement analysis, valuation, economics, engineering, or related subjects is desirable.
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills and a fundamental understanding of financial statements, including the income statement, balance sheet, and cash-flow statement.
  • Familiarity with financial modeling, corporate valuation, capital structures, project finance, or credit analysis is beneficial but not required.
  • Interest in sustainability, energy and cleantech trends, decarbonization technologies, and the financial solutions that can support clients' low carbon transition.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to synthesize financial, technical, and qualitative information and communicate conclusions clearly in presentations and written materials.
  • Intellectual curiosity, proactivity, attention to detail, sound judgment, and the ability to manage multiple assignments and work effectively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven professional environment.
  • Ability to collaborate across teams and work effectively with colleagues from different areas and backgrounds.
  • Prior internship, project, or academic experience related to banking, finance, accounting, investment management, consulting, energy, engineering, sustainability, or a related field is beneficial but not required.
