About the Role
The Manufacturing Quality Engineer is an early-career role on the Manufacturing & Test Engineering team, supporting the production of Extreme Networks' switching, routing, wireless, and cloud appliance products at our global contract manufacturing (CM) and ODM partners. Working under the mentorship of senior manufacturing engineers, you will help drive Design for Manufacturability (DFM) reviews, develop process documentation, support New Product Introduction (NPI) builds, and contribute to yield, quality, and cost improvements on the production line. This is a hands-on role that blends process engineering, supplier collaboration, and data analysis — an excellent launching point for a career in manufacturing, operations, or hardware engineering.
Key Responsibilities
- Support DFM, DFA, and DFx reviews of new networking hardware (PCB assemblies, system-level products) under the guidance of senior manufacturing engineers.
- Help develop and maintain manufacturing process documentation: work instructions, routings, BOMs, PFMEAs, and control plans.
- Participate in NPI builds (EVT/DVT/PVT) at CM sites and at Extreme labs — capturing build data, tracking issues, and driving closure.
- Assist with process qualification for SMT, PTH, BGA rework, conformal coating, mechanical assembly, and box-build operations.
- Pull and analyze production data (yield, scrap, defect Pareto, cycle time) to identify improvement opportunities and present findings to the team.
- Support root-cause analysis and 8D problem solving for top production issues; track corrective and preventive actions to closure.
- Help manage ECO/MCO impact on the production line — coordinating with planning, supply chain, and the CM to implement changes cleanly.
- Assist with first-article inspections, in-process audits, and supplier process audits at ODM partners.
- Contribute to continuous improvement projects using Lean and Six Sigma tools (5S, Kaizen, value stream mapping, SPC).
- Help specify and qualify tooling, fixtures, and assembly aids; track capital and tooling spend at the project level.
- Maintain a clean, safe, ESD-controlled work environment and follow all lab and production safety procedures.
Requirements & Tech Stack
- Bachelor's degree in Manufacturing, Industrial, Mechanical, Electrical, or related Engineering discipline (or equivalent experience).
- 0–2 years of relevant experience, including internships, co-ops, or capstone projects in manufacturing, operations, or hardware engineering.
- Working knowledge of electronic assembly processes (SMT, PTH, BGA, mechanical assembly) from coursework, internships, or hands-on projects.
- Familiarity with engineering drawings, GD&T basics, and reading BOMs and schematics.
- Comfort with data analysis tools — Excel at minimum; Power BI, Minitab, JMP, or Python a plus.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to clearly document procedures and findings.
- Curiosity, ownership mindset, and willingness to spend time on the production floor and in the lab.
Qualifications
- Preferred:
- Exposure to PLM/ERP systems (Agile, Arena, Oracle, or SAP).
- Coursework or project experience with Lean / Six Sigma, statistical process control (SPC), or Design of Experiments (DOE).
- Familiarity with IPC standards (IPC-A-610, J-STD-001) and ISO 9001 quality systems.
- Hands-on experience with CAD tools (SolidWorks, Creo, AutoCAD) for fixture or tooling concepts.
- Awareness of contract manufacturing models, supplier management, or international operations.
- Prior internship or co-op experience at an OEM, EMS, or CM in electronics manufacturing.
