About the Role

The Future Talent Program offers internships lasting up to 12 weeks, including one or more projects within the Research and Development Division. This program provides development opportunities and a chance to assess long-term career fit. The Regulated Bioanalytical Sciences team is focused on laboratory digital transformation, enhancing the capture, structure, and management of assay workflows and experimental data within Benchling. This internship is at the intersection of scientific operations, informatics, and workflow standardization in a regulated environment. The selected candidate will collaborate with scientists and process owners to improve efficiency, documentation consistency, reduce manual data entry, strengthen data quality, and support the adoption of digital laboratory workflows.

Project Overview

The intern will contribute to a digital transformation project converting prioritized Test Method (TM) documents into standardized Benchling templates. Benchling is the laboratory information management system used for capturing, organizing, and managing structured experimental workflows and data. Activities involve reviewing Test Methods to identify workflow steps, data fields, and calculations, and translating these into structured Benchling templates with supporting documentation. This project aims to reduce manual template creation, improve experimental documentation consistency, enhance future analytics readiness, and decrease reliance on static TM documents.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review prioritized Test Method documents to understand assay workflows, critical steps, documentation requirements, and data capture needs.
  • Translate TM content into standardized, reusable Benchling templates that support structured execution and documentation of laboratory workflows.
  • Identify key workflow steps, data fields, calculations, and repeatable template elements for digitization and standardization.
  • Support data field mapping and template design to improve consistency across methods and assays.
  • Collaborate with scientists and process owners to ensure templates accurately reflect method requirements and user needs.
  • Assist in evaluating template usability, consistency, and alignment with regulated documentation practices.
  • Develop user guidance and supporting documentation to promote template adoption.
  • Summarize project progress, challenges, efficiencies, and recommendations through written updates and presentations.
  • Present project outcomes at the end-of-summer intern symposium.

Requirements & Tech Stack

  • Benchling
  • Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Digital tools, spreadsheets, structured data, and template-based systems.
  • Familiarity with Benchling, LIMS, or other electronic laboratory notebook platforms is preferred.
  • Interest in scientific informatics, digital lab platforms, or workflow automation is preferred.
  • Experience with data structuring, template design, process mapping, or systems documentation is preferred.
  • Exposure to Python, R, SQL, or similar tools for automation, data analysis, or workflow support is preferred.
  • Understanding of laboratory workflows, assay execution, or regulated scientific documentation is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in:
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Computer Science
  • Data Science
  • Bioinformatics
  • Information Systems
  • Related scientific or technical discipline
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to interpret technical or procedural documentation.
  • Ability to organize and translate complex information into structured formats.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong collaboration and organizational skills.

Learning Opportunities

The Intern Will Gain Exposure To:

  • Laboratory informatics and digital transformation in a regulated bioanalytical environment.
  • Benchling and electronic laboratory notebook workflows in a scientific setting.
  • Data standardization, template design, and workflow documentation.
  • Standardization and automation of laboratory documentation workflows.
  • Cross-functional collaboration across scientific, operational, and digital teams.
  • Scientific communication and presentation in a regulated research environment.

Expected Deliverables

  • Review and assessment of prioritized Test Methods within project scope.
  • Standardized Benchling templates and recording aids for selected test methods.
  • Recommendations for template automation and workflow standardization.
  • Data field mapping and guidance to support consistency across templates.
  • User documentation to support template adoption.
  • Final summary report describing challenges, efficiencies, and future recommendations.
  • Final presentation summarizing project objectives, methods, results, and impact.
