About The SEI
The Software Engineering Institute (SEI) is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) dedicated to advancing the state of software engineering and supporting national security. The SEI solves complex, large-scale problems for strategic government clients by combining rigorous research with disciplined engineering practices.
The Opportunity
The SEI is seeking several highly motivated, intellectually curious engineering students for its Summer 2027 Internship Program. This is an opportunity to be integrated into a high-performance team of researchers and engineers working on mission-critical challenges and operate at the forefront of the industry. Candidates who are "AI-Aware"—those who understand how to integrate Agentic AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) to augment engineering workflows, accelerate development, and enhance code analysis—are sought.
Your Impact
Working alongside world-class experts, interns will engage in tasks such as:
- Prototyping & Development: Designing and implementing software prototypes to address emerging security and engineering challenges.
- Vulnerability Research: Analyzing codebases to identify weaknesses, vulnerabilities, and potential attack vectors.
- Resilience Engineering: Researching and implementing novel methods to improve software robustness and system resilience.
- Innovation: Developing new tools, techniques, and automated processes to solve complex software problems faced by the US Government.
- Scholarly Contribution: Depending on the scope of the project, there may be an opportunity to co-author research findings for publication in academic or industry forums.
Minimum Requirements

- Ability to work on-site at the SEI Pittsburgh, PA office for the duration of the summer 2027 internship.
- Ability to pass a background check.
- Eligibility to work in the United States without visa sponsorship.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
