Software Engineer

About the Role

Callzo is seeking a self-taught engineer who thinks in code. The focus is on what you've built, with strong fundamentals and a system design mindset. You prioritize quality and security over speed, and can take a vague problem and deliver a polished solution.

Key Responsibilities

• Own features end to end: understand the problem, design the system, build it, ship it, and keep it running.
• Design and build backend services, APIs, and integrations with reliability and security in mind.
• Build clean, fast, and polished product experiences on the frontend.
• Keep the platform stable through monitoring, debugging, performance optimization, and handling edge cases.
• Review and improve code, including AI-generated code, and raise the quality bar for the team.
• Work directly with founders to decide on future product development.

Requirements & Tech Stack

• Shipped real projects (e.g., GitHub profile, a live app, or a launched product).
• Understanding of how systems fit together: APIs, databases, queues, caching, auth, and failure modes.
• Proficiency with Postgres (schema design, indexes, transactions).
• Experience using Redis (caching, queues, rate limiting).
• Secure coding practices: input validation, auth checks, secrets handling, and safe payment/webhook flows.
• Heavy use of AI coding tools like Claude Code or Cursor, with the ability to review, test, and fix generated code.
• Ability to work with little supervision.
• Commitment to 40+ hours a week for at least 6 months.

Qualifications

• No degree or college required.
• Proven ability to build and ship real projects.
• Strong understanding of system design principles.
• Emphasis on quality and security.
