About the Role
An Engineering Intern will work with the CTO on tools used by engineers and coding agents. The intern will work on real systems from the start, including agent workflows, command-line tools, and web access infrastructure. The role involves running existing systems, identifying inefficiencies, and shipping fixes. From there, the intern will take ownership of a tool or workflow and improve it end-to-end.
Key Responsibilities
- Use existing tools on real tasks and document surprising findings.
- Ship a small pull request to fix a broken skill, improve a script, add a test, or remove a rough edge.
- Deconstruct and improve an existing agent workflow.
- Build a tool to automate a manual process for a teammate.
- Investigate failures, write tests, review code, and explain decision rationale.
- Work directly with the CTO and other engineers, participating in the same tickets, reviews, and pull requests.
Requirements & Tech Stack
- Experience with Git.
- Proficiency in at least one programming language.
- Familiarity with TypeScript and shell is common, with some Go and Python nearby.
- Ability to work through an unfamiliar system is valued over prior stack knowledge.
- Experience with coding agents is not a prerequisite, but the ability to identify incorrect output, design tests for it, and make sound judgments when tools are insufficient is important.
Qualifications
- Have built something you care about and can explain the choices made (e.g., a useful script, an open-source contribution, a research tool, a game, or a personal project).
- Ability to work in New York City for part of the week.
- Ability to enter a lawful contractor engagement.
- No specific degree, school year, GPA, or previous internship required.
Interview Process
- A conversation with the CTO about your built projects, learning goals, and the work at String.
- A project walkthrough with an engineer, where you present a project you know well and explain your decisions.
- A working session in the New York office on a small, self-contained tooling problem.
