About the Role

Endurance Power is developing lightweight solar solutions for electric vehicles. We are seeking a hands-on engineering intern to help develop a real-time solar and battery monitoring system for our vehicle-mounted solar retrofit technology. You will build a working prototype using an ESP32 microcontroller to measure, process, and display electrical data from solar panels, an MPPT charge controller, and a battery system. The goal is to create a monitoring solution showing solar power generation, energy delivered to the battery, and system performance under operating conditions. This role involves hardware integration, embedded programming, sensor interfacing, data acquisition, and dashboard development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Hardware integration: Integrate an ESP32 with suitable voltage and current sensors to monitor solar panel output and battery charging parameters.
  • Electrical measurements: Measure solar-side voltage, current, power, and energy generated, along with battery voltage, charging current, and energy delivered to the battery.
  • Firmware development: Program the ESP32 to collect, process, and transmit sensor data reliably using embedded C/C++ or Arduino IDE.
  • Dashboard development: Build a live dashboard to display electrical parameters, historical data, energy generation, and system performance.
  • Wireless connectivity: Implement communication such as Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, with potential for cloud-based remote monitoring.
  • System testing: Validate sensor readings against reference instruments and test the prototype under different solar irradiance and charging conditions.
  • Documentation: Prepare wiring diagrams, a bill of materials, firmware documentation, and instructions for replicating the prototype.

What You Will Build

By the end of the internship, the objective is to have a working prototype featuring:

  • Real-time monitoring of solar panel voltage, current, power, and cumulative energy generation.
  • Monitoring of battery voltage, charging current, and energy delivered to the battery.
  • A live dashboard with clear visualizations of the system’s performance.
  • Data logging for analyzing daily solar generation and charging behavior.
  • A tested and documented prototype deployable on an electric vehicle for field trials.

The system should distinguish between power generated by solar panels and power reaching the battery, accounting for conversion losses and other system loads.

Requirements & Tech Stack

  • Basic understanding of electrical circuits, voltage, current, power, and energy.
  • Hands-on experience with ESP32, Arduino, or similar microcontrollers.
  • Familiarity with sensors, ADCs, embedded C/C++, or Arduino IDE.
  • Interest or experience in data acquisition, serial communication, and debugging electronics.
  • Basic programming skills in Python, JavaScript, or a similar language for dashboard development.

Good to Have

  • Experience with current sensors, voltage dividers, shunt sensors, or Hall-effect sensors.
  • Familiarity with MPPT charge controllers, solar PV systems, and battery charging.
  • Experience building dashboards using platforms such as Node-RED, Grafana, ThingsBoard, or a custom web application.
  • Knowledge of MQTT, Wi-Fi communication, databases, or cloud telemetry.
  • Experience with multimeters, oscilloscopes, and electronics prototyping.

Qualifications

  • Students or recent graduates from Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Instrumentation, Mechatronics, or related disciplines.
  • Strong practical skills and a willingness to learn are valued over exhaustive knowledge of every listed tool.
