About the Role
The Robotic Teleoperation Pilot Intern - Advanced Robotic Hands is a part-time, on-site role based in San Antonio, TX. This role involves piloting Alt-Bionics’ advanced robotic hands through their teleoperation system (R.A.D.) and becoming the team’s most proficient operator. The day-to-day work focuses on planning and executing complex manipulation tasks, piloting live customer demonstrations, and recovering from task failures. The intern will operate the system under real-time delay between input, motion, and visual feedback, log task outcomes and failure modes, propose new demonstration tasks, and help build training materials and recorded demos. This is not a software or hardware development role.
Key Responsibilities
- Pilot Alt-Bionics’ advanced robotic hands through the teleoperation system (R.A.D.).
- Plan and execute increasingly complex manipulation tasks to identify system capabilities and limitations.
- Pilot live customer demonstrations, both in person and remotely.
- Recover cleanly when a task does not go as planned.
- Log task outcomes, failure modes, and operator workarounds in a form engineering can act on.
- Propose new demonstration tasks.
- Help build training materials and recorded demos.
Requirements & Tech Stack
- Teleoperation System (R.A.D.): Ability to quickly learn the robotic teleoperation system, including its control interface, input hardware, and safe operation of electromechanical equipment.
- Real-time Problem Solving: Strong problem-solving skills under real-time conditions, diagnosing and adapting approaches when manipulation tasks fail.
- Control Latency Operation: Demonstrated ability to operate under control latency and remain composed when visual feedback and system response do not match.
- Fine Motor Control & Hand-Eye Coordination: Sustained fine motor control and hand-eye coordination for multi-hour piloting sessions.
- Data Collection: Comfort with structured testing and data collection, including accurate logging of task procedures, outcomes, failure modes, and operator workarounds.
- Communication: Clear written and verbal communication for providing concise, actionable feedback to engineers and contributing to reports, training guides, and customer demonstrations.
- Customer Interaction: Ability to pilot the system during live customer demos, adapt to unexpected task issues, and represent the team professionally.
- Collaboration: Collaborative mindset for working closely with engineering, design, and product teams.
- Safety & Protocols: Consistent adherence to safety and lab protocols.
- Basic Computer Tools: Familiarity with spreadsheets, word processing, and presentation software.
- Competitive or high-level gaming experience (fighting games, rhythm games, sim racing, flight sims, high-ping FPS) is a strong plus.
- Prior RC, drone, or remote operation experience is helpful but not required.
- Experience with video capture or editing for demo recordings is a plus.
Qualifications
- Ability to work on-site part time in San Antonio, TX.
- Ability to manage time effectively as this is an internship role.
- Ability to adapt to evolving demo requests and testing priorities.
- Interest in robotics, prosthetics, teleoperation, or human-machine interaction.
- Coursework or projects in engineering, robotics, biomechanics, or computer science is beneficial.
